Subject: MTV and Duran Duran in the 80's

Written By: Susan on 3/20/2001 at 10:49 p.m.

I am graduate student at a university doing a project on Duran Duran in the 1980s and MTV. I would to know what effects Duran Duran had on you and if they influenced you as a person and how. I would also like to know who was your favorite member and how he influenced you from the way dressed to the way you conducted yourself and made any decisions in life. I would also like to know if you saw them in concert in the 1980s and what was your experience.Lastly, I would like to know how MTV influenced in the 1980s.

Duran Duran - Answers to your questions:

Effects: Every positive feeling one can feel

Influenced in only that I dressed very much like them.

Favorite Member: They were all SO Darn HOT!!!
A deeper weakness for Simon and John.

Concert: Early 80's. There was a dedication of "Save a Prayer" to the late Marvin Gaye shortly after his death.

MTV was indeed the awesomest thing ever to catch our attention. Too bad it's gone down the toilet since the 80's ended.

Like April, I owned every piece of Duran Duran stuff I could get my hands on. Nick was my fav, but I had found a little "tiger baby" necklace that Simon LeBon and treasured it (I STILL have it!!)My walls were covered with there photos and I even had a Duran Duran scrapbook with every article I could find about them in it. I even got an English pen pal and she would send me copies of the teen mags from over there. I had the hat and the shoes, every button, t-shirt, tapes and albums (both of the same title but i still had to have both, just in case!) On my 14th birthday my sister called our local radio station and they announced me as the biggest Duran Duran fan ever. I know my parents were happy when I lost interest and they broke up. We had to re-paint my room after I took all my stuff down. Now here I am 30 and I still have my Duran Duran scrapbook...is has seen better days, but it has no less than 500 pages of all Duran Duran and i would even cut out there names from anything and glue it on the front. I sure one of these days when I have kids they will think I was a freak, but I have never regretted being a Duran Duran fan. And still am!

I was in middle school when I discovered D2 (82-83). I 'swooned' over Nick Rhodes (keyboardist). Now that I look back on it, he was the most (if only) feminine looking one of the 5! My mother would make weekly trips to the local record store and buy me every new D2 thing that they had. I ended up with about 70 buttons, every import LP, tshirts, stickers, bandana's, videos (beta) etc. I had a pair of those white shoes they all wore (we called them jazz shoes), and the tan panama hat that was worn mostly by John Taylor. My walls were covered with every picture or poster I could find of D2, my mother drew the line when I started putting them on the ceiling I guess you could say I was a Duran Duran freak! LOL. I did see them in concert in 83. It was a mad house! My cousin and I (she was crazy about John Taylor) screamed almost the whole concert. A lot of girls were crying because they were so 'in love' with them. To stand in line and get a souveneir or tshirt was another experience. I waited in line about 20-30 mins just for a shirt. I started to lose interest when they split up, and I discovered INXS.
To this day, I still have every D2 item, albums and all, even a duran duran purse.

As for MTV, we didn't (and still don't) have cable where I live, so I can't respond to that.

well, DD2's videos definately introduced me to their music.. the only decision that it influenced me on, was this website.. which was that I wanted an 80s site, because that's how I liked to view the guys still.. not that I don't like anything they've done since, but the 80s stuff is still my favorite..

Mtv definately helped spark my interest in following music more.. it's shame what's happened to it since then.. more of a teenager channel than a music channel for teenagers..

Well I was in JR High when Duran Duran was big(6th and 7th grade 83-84). According to where I lived in Houston, TX, this band effected the way the girls dressed more than the boys. Seeing bands like Culture Club and Duran Duran for the first time was a shock to young males who werent use to seeing guys so feminin looking. If a guy mentioned that they liked one of these bands, most guys usually would laugh at them(this was the experience at our school). Nevertheless, I loved the music from Duran Duran(just kept it to myself), I did'nt dig the way their feminin attire though.

I need to make a correction. After thinking about it, I remembered that Duran Duran were cool among boys until their "view to a kill" and "wild boys" period(late 84). Thats when they got more make-up oriented it seems.

Billy, I'm sorry, but I have to correct you. They were more make-up oriented in their first years (very early 80's). That's when they wore a lot of make-up and the "romantic" style shirts...ruffles and all!

Maybe they were make-up oriented in their early days, but they sure were'nt on the "Hungry like the WOlf" video. ALSO, I don't believe I'm wrong in saying they were very make-up oriented in 84-85. Just watch their "View to a Kill" video. How can you get more make-up on than some of the band had on there?
