Subject: 80s Prom Fashions

Written By: Elizabeth on 3/22/2001 at 5:13 p.m.

I've been invited to a "prom" with an 80s theme. Although I graduated in '83, I didn't go to the prom, and need some reminders on what type of dresses the girls wore. Help please! Thanks!

I can't remember anyone even wearing a long dress at my grad...

I do know that bubble skirts were extremely popular, above knee length, with the bodice of the dress fitted and either strapless or with poofy sleeves.

And remember the skirts that were longer on one side than the other?

Ahhh, seems like only yesterday! Have a blast as you recreate this awesome decade, at least for one night!

I graduated in 81 and wore a boring tux to my prom..But since then I have attended a few 80s parties in one of my two awesome prom dresses from the 80s. Both were from around 1987. One had a lycra stretchy tank style top with an attached taffeta skirt. The top was black and the skirt was knee length, turquoise with black polka dots and it pouffed way out with several crinolines underneath. A matching taffeta bolero style jacket was worn with it. Also black tights. My other prom dress was more of the southern belle style. Pale pink satin with an organdy overlay. The skirt was very full and held out with a hoop-like petticoat under it. It had puff sleeves and an attached sash with a bow in the front. Both these styles of prom dresses were very popular back in the mid to late 80s, and in my opinion, prom dresses have only gone down hill since..Back in the 80s, they had charm, personality and you were really noticed when wearing one of them. Anyway...hope this helps with some ideas..Good luck! And write back and let us know what you found to wear!

Well, I didn't graduate until 88. When I was in high school, the dresses were the 'southern belle' type. Floor length, full, lacy, and satin. I hope this helps. (If I had a picture handy, I'd scan one of my proms pics for you).

I wore a gown that had 3' of crinolin under the floorlength layered lace skirt. It reminded me of Cinderella. It was tight on top like a strapless but had one thin strap and a big flower on that side. Of course it was purple with white lace and the low pumps were dyed to match. I wish I had a scanner. Make sure you make your hair real big. Bye.
