Subject: 1981: Behind The Music this Sunday

Written By: james martin on 5/28/2001 at 2:03 p.m.

This Sunday, VH1's BTM will profiled probably the most diverse year of the 80's(Musically speaking), 1981. It was the year Ronald Reagan became our new president, then nearly gets killed a few months later. The American hostages finally came home after 440 DAYS(correct me if I'm wrong), Music was diverse from country(Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, the late, great Eddie Rabbit, The Oak Ridge Boys, T.G. Sheppard). R&B(Kool & The Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Yarbrouh & Peoples, Rick James, Smokey Robinson, Ray Parker, Jr. & Raydio & The Pointer Sisters). Jazz(Lee Ritenour, The Manhattan Transfer, Stanley Clark & George Duke, Quincy Jones, & Al Jarreau.) Soft rock mostly Air Supply & Neil Diamond( who will have a BTM soon) HELLO? Barbra Streisand. Rock groups gets soft:REO Speedwagon, Journey, Foreigner, Styx, & The Moody Blues(who made a big comeback along with REO, Lulu & Gary U.S. Bonds). ROCK(Rush, Genesis/Phil Collins, Loverboy,Stevie Nicks, AC/DC, The Police, Lindsey Buckingham( who will have a BTM soon along with Pat Benatar) How can I forget 2 of the most popular groups since the 60's: The Rolling Stones & The Who. We said goodbye to reggae legend Bob Marley & said hello to a new cable channel called MTV(who will celebrate its 20th anniversary Aug. 1. I know BTM won't cover everything, but I know which music format won't be feature: JAZZ. I know this the only year of the 80's that was diverse in music than any other in that decade or the 90's or even now. Sad, isn't it?

So what did you think of BTM 1981? I thought it was really good, but way to short. I could of watched for hours.

It made me miss the old videos and VJs more than I already do. They really need to play these old videos somewhere!

I agree that BTM: 1981 should have been longer. I, too, saw the episode and was also reminiscing and remembering how good music used to be back then. I used to look forward to the World Premiere videos. Boy the times sure have changed!

Actually, they already do. It's called "VH-1 Classic". Not quite what MTV was in its heyday, but probably as close as we'll ever come. Call your cable co. today!!!
