Subject: Dance Songs of 1989

Written By: popmusiclover on 6/5/2001 at 3:58 p.m.

Hi everybody...

I was wondering if anyone can give me the names of songs that were popular in the clubs back in 1989. That was the time I was really into dancing, and I'd love to find some of those great tunes. Any information is greatly appreciated!!!

You don't need me when you've got TX, (TX, it may have been a pain for you coming up with that list, but now I have to find all the fabulousness you reminded me of!), but here's a few I can add. I think all of them were released prior to '89 but still being played where I danced. Of course, that may very well be due to the amount of whining I did in the booth until I heard them:)

Big Pig "I Can't Break Away"
Tones on Tail "Go!"
My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult "Kooler Than Jesus"
Moscowa TV "Generator 7/8"
And I have no idea who did this, but "The Omen" was great too.

When you find everything burned onto a couple of CD's, let me know...

TX....you are so sweet to make up this list for me. Many thanks! There is something I've gotta tell you...looking over your original list I noticed a song title that popped out at me. It is called "New York", by Micro Chip League. In 1989 I heard this frequently in the clubs I went to, and even asked a DJ once what the song was. I think he must have given me some false information, because for years I tried to find it, but with no luck. When I saw it on your list I just had a feeling that it was the one, and after downloading it...sure enough it was! Our tastes seem to be very similar and I'm sure I will find other great songs on your list. I'm so glad I decided to ask. Now hopefully I'll be able to make myself a cool dance CD to remind me of that time in my life. Again, I appreciate all of your efforts!

P.S. No worries about the dates you listed...they all sound close enough!

I was happy to help.

"New York" by the Micro Chip League is probably my favorite 80s club tune, or at least in the top three. It took me forever to find out who sang that song. You know there aren't many songs with New York as their title (I wish.)

What city did you go clubbing in, in 89?

How funny to hear that you, too, had trouble trying to find this song or figure out who sang it!

Believe it or not, I grew up on a tiny island in the Western Pacific ocean called Guam. It's a U.S. territory. Because of the its small size clubs were one of the places to go there unless you were into water sports. I did not try to find that song there, of course. I went to the mainland for that! Judging by your name I take it you went clubbing somewhere in....Texas? LOL! :0

I have heard of Guam. A friend of mine went there on business, he said it wasn't quite what you expect from an island in the Pacific.

I am from the island of Houston....well last week we were anyway (hadn't had rain like that in over 20 years, the whole city was under water.)

Have you had any luck finding those songs?

TX....I did hear about the flooding you're having over there. Hope you're staying dry! I'm in Hawaii and it's pleasant here.

I have been getting some of the songs you listed from 1988 and 1989, as well as a few others that you recommended from other years. What's funny is that I had totally forgotten about groups like The Cult! I guess at the time I was more interested in trying to find my future husband than in who was singing what song. I mean I knew the more pop stuff, but not the cult favorites. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I started getting into collecting music. And now that I have discovered the world of downloading songs I am trying to find the missing links in my collection. You've been a great help and thanks again!
