I had one prior to 77, because I upgraded in 77 (my 8th b-day) to the Mean Green Machine. Pretty sure my uncle (9yrs older than me) had one in a picture when I was 2 or 3, so that'd be 72 or so.

Not that I enjoy proving you wrong! >;-P But I'm pretty sure he's right.

Sorry.

Here's a link to some info on the Big Wheel. This link says they were first introduced in the 60's. Manufactured by Empire Toys.

They were originally made by the Louis Marx Co., probably the best-known toy manufacturer to be based in West Virginia (if not the only one). The company was based in Glen Dale, which is south of Wheeling. I played with many a Marx toy when I was a kid, but never had a Big Wheel nor Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots (also made by Marx)…

according to a page I found about the company:

Empire has been a toy manufacturer for approximately 40 years. TheCompany's business experienced significant change in 1993 whensubstantial non-toy operations were sold. Following the divestituresof non-toy businesses, Empire's operations were focused on its toybusiness, including the Big Wheel(R) non-powered ride-on product linewhich has been sold throughout the United States since 1970, and itsplastic decorative holiday products business.
