Subject: Question about gum

Written By: Lily on 6/22/2001 at 4:16 p.m.

I was reading your list of foods for the 80's when I noticed Freshen Up gum. I see that Freshen Up gum is still sold today in spearmint flavor but I could swear that Freshen-Up was called "Chewels" or "Jewels" gum in the 80's. It came in the same green foil wrapper just like today's Freshen Up and I believe that it also came in bubble gum flavor that had a pink foil wrapper. Can anyone tell me if I'm right or wrong? Thanks.

I've never even heard of Chewels. Freshen up was my favorite gum growing up (70's & 80's). I used to love the Cinnamon flavor. I think they're 2 different gums all together.

I'm not totally sure..but I remember it as being called 'chewels' as well..at least if we ARE wrong, we know we aren't crazy--we both have the same mixed up memory! LOL!!

I could be wrong, but I think these were 2 different gums. Freshen Up was around in the 70s, and I remember it being sold under that name since then. Chewels, on the other hand, I first remember seeing in the 80s sometime.

Is Chewels still made? I haven't seen it in ages.

I'm pretty sure that Chewels was a copycat of Freshen Up. I think there were at least 3, maybe 4 of the "gushy middle"-type gums by the mid-80s.

Kinda like Bubble Yum/Hubba Bubba years. One became big, and then a mini Coke/Pepsi-type competition began.

I never really thought that they were the same gum. Personally I don't remember Freshen Up right off--is it still around? Does it taste the same, with the gushy middle? How sad is that? I guess I don't chew enough gum these days!
I don't think Chewels is made now, just because I think I'd recongnize the name if I saw it in line at Wal Mart! :o) LOL! I was just excited to see that someone else remembered a gum called Chewels--I think of it now and again when the kids eat their Dubble Bubble and I was afraid I was crazy!! :o)
