Subject: The downfall of Gloria Estefan

Written By: Andrew on 6/23/2001 at 11:26 a.m.

Okay, this is just an observation, but does anyone else notice that Gloria Estefan hasn't been as successful as her 80's career since the accident? I love Gloria to death, but it seems that she hasn't been able to pull off a #1 hit or barely even a Top 10 hit in 12 years. I'm not sure if it's because she's been putting out so many Latin albums, or if maybe her musical style that we've all grown to love in the 80's, is just not popular anymore. She is certainly less pop-oriented in the 90's, and drove toward more toward her Latin roots. It's such a shame that Ricky Martin can do so well with his Latin career, and Gloria can't. Then again, Ricky Martin is also on the downfall, and Gloria certainly had Latin hits in the 80's as well. What is it with Latin artists? They have succes for a very short period of time, and then fade away into nowhere. If anybody has any input on everything I've said, especially Gloria Estefan's career, I'd love to hear from you.

Gloria's downfall actually started in the late 80s regardless of the fact that she was still popular then. When she went solo, nearly every release of hers was a ballad. Don't get me wrong. Ballads have their place, but her music started to sound the same as the single and album before and, I think, many listeners agreed with me that her music wasn't as good as when she fronted Miami Sound Machine. Remember the first time you heard "Conga" or "Bad Boy"? It was different than anything you heard before and that's what was missing later on. Her music became too formulated to continue to bring her the huge success she enjoyed in the 80s.
