Didn't you ask this question Tuesday, 10 July 2001, at 8:23 p.m. EST?

Someone with the same name did! And I answered it a little over 2 hours after it was asked. So go down and check the answer.

One more thing! How can someone email you if you don't leave an address?

*sigh* I know just where you're coming from, TX - ah, 'tis a usually thankless job around here for us regular contributors who try to help others, isn't it???

That's part of the reason I've cut back significantly on this message board over the last three months. Although I still read it regularly (almost daily), this is only my 20th post to the '80s board since Saturday, 21 April, which has been quite a drop for me, considering I've been a regular part of it just a month shy of two years now. In fact, after climbing well into 4th place on the "Top 10" list (w/ over 350 posts), I see Wicked Lester has now pushed me back to 5th, and April is just about ready to move me further down to #6. Oh well, at least I'm still King of the '70s board!

Case in point: Last month, you may recall that someone posted here asking about why Casey Kasem had left "American Top 40" back in 1988. I responded by letting him know that there was a recent book out on the topic that was a very good read for anyone who grew up on that radio show, and it would answer his q's. I provided all the details on the book, and even went so far as to post a link to an on-line source where he could buy it. (No, I'm not getting commission!) Then w/o so much as even thanking me, rather than pursue the book himself, he posted again, practically asking me to re-type a chapter or two from my own personal copy of it here on this board! Haha - YEAH, RIGHT!!! (Another poster even agreed w/ him, saying, "JUST ANSWER THE DANG QUESTION !!!!!," essentially feeling I should've done the same thing!) It's simply amazing what people expect for free these days - almost like we "owe" them something. (Just like all those teenagers who seem to come on here asking us to help them write their reports!) People are definitely lazy - I mean, geez, even if it was true he couldn't afford his own copy of the book (as he claimed), unless he lives in BFE, why not head down to the nearest Borders or Barnes & Noble, as I noted both carry it??? (Heck, even I bought my copy at B&N.) Once there, he could easily pull a copy off the shelf, buy a latte from their cafe, cozy up in one of their many easy chairs, and spend an hour or two reading it for FREE!!! Oh, and don't we still have public libraries in this country?!? Geesh! Needless to say, I didn't waste any more of my time responding to that person, and let the thread die...

And besides, for the past year or so, you seem to be doing a good job of fielding almost all of the music q's that have appeared on this board anyway, LOL! So I've pretty much stepped aside in that dept. - and since you apparently check the board more frequently than I do, you usually get to them first. And while I'm on the subject, I'm still not sure if you get most of your answers from your own personal music collection (as I do), or if your secret is a bunch of reliable internet sources that you turn to w/ a few simple keystrokes, but hat's off to ya - you've definitely gotten some obscure ones that I never would have!

Anyway, sorry for the rant. Okay, I'm off my soapbox now...

Sometimes it is.

I did notice your slacking off starting near the end of April. I have been wondering what the reason was.

I hear ya. A year or so ago people would email me all the time to thank me for an answer (if they didn't post it in the thread.) I think I have got 2 or 3 in the last 12 months. If I don't know the answers, (NOW) I will not spend much time looking for it. I have been known to get a little obsessed with finding answers (not any more.) Not because I can't find the answer, or that I don't have the time to look for it. It is because some of these people will not even let you know they read your answer. I don't even care if they say thanks.....just an OK or something!

Yeah...I'm just a month behind you. 2 years in Sept.

Yeah, I do remember that thread. Not very thankful was he. Don't let it get to you, and be more active again.

I have not replyed to those. It wouldn't take them long to find what they are looking for (most of the time.)

I have said it before....I do look up a lot of the answers (on the web.) Most of the obscure ones, I'm not even sure if I ever heard them. There are a lot that I know who the artist is, or the title. But I look up the album it was on (mostly at cdnow.)

No prob.

Yep, kinda similar here. Once in a blue moon, I'll still get a personal e-mail from the original poster thanking me for helping them out, if they didn't already respond on the message board itself - but that is fairly rare. I do, however, continue to receive a fair amount of e-mails from folks who read this board, see my posts helping others on many of the music q's, and decide to e-mail me directly w/ their own music q's, thus bypassing this mb altogether. I try to answer most of them (when possible), but after I e-mail them back, again, it's very rare that they reply w/ any form of "thank you" or other acknowledgment! Like you said, just an "OK" is fine here, too, but alas...

Generally speaking, I've always only answered those q's that I know off the top of my head, or can find in one of my many music books/catalogs by double-checking a fact or two (e.g., date, album title, etc.), provided I feel the poster has given enough info to go on. But if the person just gives 3 or 4 lines of lyrics, and they don't jump out at me, I rarely take the time to do any on-line searches, or the like. However, I do know that "obsessed" feeling you describe; it happens to me when I recognize the song or artist the person is looking for, and the correct answer doesn't immediately come to me - that's when I really start digging, no matter how long it takes till I find it, LOL!

: Yeah, I do remember that thread. Not very
: thankful was he. Don't let it get to you,
: and be more active again.

Just one of the more recent examples, but by no means the first, nor the only one I'm basing my complaint on. As for becoming "more active again", is it me, or do the majority of the music q's nowadays seem to be repeats of ones that have already been answered on this mb at least once or twice before, if not more???

Ah, good ol' "cdnow"! I generally rely more on music books/catalogs, since they contain info on out-of-print titles (in addition to the current stuff), unlike any of the on-line retailers. But I do like the fact that you can usually sample "snippets" of many of the songs found on the CDs available through on-line retailers, which I've found can sometimes help better than a book on the more recent stuff. Anyway, just my two cents...

There are a lot of repeats like "Major Tom," seems every few months someone wants to know who sings it. I guess the reason for all the repeats is those are the only songs getting played on the radio.

Regarding the issue of people not thanking a person for any information provided, I think there are a couple of reasons. First, I notice that many people request email answers. In these cases, they might not be able to find the board again (of course bookmarking would solve this) and may never even see that their question has been answered. Second, there are some people who simply don't know any better. "Please" and "thank you", unfortunately, are foreign concepts to many young people today. Still, I get where you both are coming from.

On the request email answers issue. Most of the time I email the answers too. I just post the answer on the board in case anyone else was wondering what the answer was.

And what about the person wanting an email answer.....and doesn't leave an addy!
