Subject: Thanks, Beth!

Thanks for replying. Yeah, I think Star Hits was actually started in Britain and (if I'm not mistaken), sort of expanded to the States, except in Britain it was Smash Hits (which, I think, is still around) and over here it was Star Hits. And I think the content varied, but it was still basically the same magazine. I'm pretty sure that Neil Tennant actually started the magazine and used to write for it in it's early days. I remember that was one of his claims to fame--that he was a former "rock journalist." I even remember reading an interview in Star Hits with a little known British punk band--(I can picture them but I can't recall their name) just trashing the hell out of the Pet Shop Boys. I thought at the time that it was pretty gutsy of Star Hits to print their comments--considering Tennant's association with the magazine! Star Hits rocked. I loved the interviews, and the fact that they featured bands that weren't as well known (or appreciated) in the States as they were in Britain. Do you remember some of the goofy columns, like Bold Type? And there was a column by a staff writer called Jackie that was quite good (she later left, and another woman called Nikki took it over). I know I had a bunch of back copies saved at one time, but they seem to have disappeared over the years. Ah well.... Thanks again for replying!

Yeah, I remember columns such as "Bold Type" and "The Chatter Box." I also remember an article called "We Test Rock Stars on Their Knowledge of Rock" (or something like that) where they asked several bands questions like "What was Elvis's middle name?" Some bands intentionally did poorly on the test and gave funny answers, while others like Siouxsie and the Banshees answered everything correctly. I can't believe I remember this stuff after all these years!

Cheers,

Beth

I had forgotten Chatterbox! That was another great column. I also loved the questions they asked in some of the less serious interviews. I think I remember them asking Howard Jones something like "Do you have a big mirror in your bathroom?" (no joke!) and they asked another artist (the name escapes me now) "Will you describe your kitchen for us?" The funny thing was, a lot of times, the interviewee would give these straight, serious answers!
