Subject: 80's Regrets

Written By: james martin on 8/16/2001 at 6:15 p.m.

I've been watching "Where Are They Now?" on VH1 for a year & a half now & a lot of people from the 80's now say they want to forget that decade. Examples:Nu Schooz says they haven't listen to their own music in a decade & they want to forget the clothes they wore back then. They say their some of the clothes "They could get bribe for wearing them". Glass Tiger says the only thing they hate about the 80's was their "fashion foopah". A stupid word. Who came up with that term anyway? Bon Jovi said that the only thing that you you can torture him is that you make him watch their first 5 videos. "Runaway", "She Don't Know Me", "In And Out Of Love", "Only Lonely" & "Silent Knight". I can understand that; but, why would say something bad about a decade you somewhat hated when you didn't know what was going to happening. If it was disagreement with the record companies, spokespersons, accountants to name a few that left a lot of them in pain; I can understand that as well; but it's been 20 yrs. healing has to come. It might have been a painful decade for some; but, don't tell the fans when they see you performing on stage.

In my opinion, I think some of these regrets about the way they dressed in the 80's are just lame covers for some of their real regrets which they would never talk about in public, namely their possible sex, alcohol and drug abuses and just the plain fact that they may have "acted a fool" one too many times in their prime. Take Vanity for instance, she did everything under the sun bouncing from one bad thing to worse. Then one day woke up and became a Christian because all of the sudden for the first time in her sober moment realized she felt shame. Well, at least she was honest in the telling of her story and real regrets.

P.S. I do acknowledge that many artists have shared the pains of some of their addictions, so my statements above exclude those artists. I will add, however, that I find it difficult to sympathize with people who have everything and almost piss it away at the drop of a dime due to alcohol and drug abuse.

For some reason, it has become chic for 80s artists to renounce that decade. Too bad, because every time they do it it's a slap in the face to those of us who bought their music back then.

What about those of US who still like it.......

These people need to find something better to cry about, who cares how they dressed 15 years ago. I think some of the crap they wore in the 60s and 70s is far worse.

Have you ever seen old video and pictures of the Beatles back in the 60s? Didn't they look ridiculous? But you never the three living Beatles ever renounce the decade. The 80s were a part of our lives and what we did and what we wore reflected who we were back then. I have no shame in that.

I agree that those former musicians do need to find something else to worry about. What's done is done, and there's no need to fret over what went on back then. I've heard people say that you are your own worst critic, and I think it is so true. They might not have liked (now) how they looked (then), but WE love it!

And besides, they were wearing what everyone else was wearing. That's what I find funny. They say "what was I thinking?" when they look back. Um, you were thinking "this is what rock bands are wearing" and maybe even "that's a cool look".

And, as for Bon Jovi, I'd be more embarrassed with some of the outfits on your current tour, than anything from the 80s. Sambora's hats have been, um, interesting everytime I see them on VH1 (which has been once a day it seems this past month).
