Subject: Top 80 of 80's

Written By: Christy on 9/3/2001 at 2:22 a.m.

Did anyone catch the Top 80 of the 80's on Mtv...it reminded me of so many songs I have not heard in soooo long...being 18 in '89...I truly lived the entire 80's decade...but was disappointed with the number one "Billie Jean"..."Video Killed the Radio Star" should have been number one....not that it did..it just set us up to the all new video era!!!

first off,the countdown was on vh1...but i absolutely loved it!!! so many of the videos they showed were great!! the flock of seagulls, the billy idol, the U2,duranduran, the CURE, all the michael jackson, all of it was good sh*t!!! even if i didn't totally agree, it still kicked ass. it's when videos were actually good and had some creativity with the bands, not just all these half naked girls running around!

I missed it, but if your list above is accurate, it sounds like it was the same ol' (ahem) sh*t to me...

I know you're one of the young'uns here, but was "I Ran" really one of the 80 best videos of the '80s, even if it did lack bikini-clad girls?!? Let's hope VH-1 has worn out some of their videotapes by now...

How 'bout bringing back "The Salt in My Tears"??? "Modern Day Delilah"??? Heck, even "The Superbowl Shuffle"??? I doubt anyone currently at VH-1 has even heard of those (great) '80s songs...

Oh man... how much I love that song... looked for years for it. Thank God for Napster... now I finally have it.

It's funny you should mention "The Superbowl Shuffle"...I was just talking to my husband about that a couple of days ago, saying how I would like to see it again. He agreed. He has always been a huge Chicago Bears fan and has especially fond memories of that 1984-85 season with Walter Payton and Jim McMahon. I think everybody was surprised when they and the rest of their team showed up in a music video! Maybe we need to start a petition to get VH-1 to show it again...???

"We are the Bears'...shufflin' crew
Shufflin' on down...doin' it for you
We're so bad...we know we're good
Blowin' your mind...like we knew we would

You know we're just...struttin' for fun
Struttin' our stuff for everyone
We're not here...to start no trouble
We're just here to do the Superbowl shuffle..."

Being that I'm originally from the S.F. Bay Area, I was never much of a Bears fan (you can guess where my loyalty lies), but nevertheless, I always enjoyed that song and video as well...

"The Superbowl Shuffle" by The Chicago Bears Shufflin' Crew was released as a single in December of '85, and was issued in three formats here in the U.S.: 7" vinyl, 12" vinyl, and cassette maxi-single (the latter being the equivalent of the 12" vinyl). I have the cassette maxi-single myself, so even though radio and VH-1 will probably never ever play the song again, at least I can still hear it whenever I want. The song actually made the pop chart here in the U.S. during the Winter of '86 (just missing the Top 40), and was certified gold. A "substantial portion" of the proceeds from sales of the single went to Chicago-area charities. Although "The Superbowl Shuffle" proved to be a rousing success, there was no full album from the team, just the one charity single...

As for the video, I haven't seen it since early '86 (geez, has it really been more than 15 years?!?), although a pre-recorded version of it was also available commercially, and I hope to add it to my collection someday...

Me, too. I loved that team! After years of suffering, Bears fans finally had something to cheer about. I left the team as a fan the day they fired Ditka. As for the song, it was just like those guys, but they went a little too hollywood for my taste when they did the video.

Ah, Karen, I knew the day would come when we would disagree about something

If you only knew how much I loathed that video and song! I was (and still am) a huge Rams fan, and the Bears shut the Rams out 24-0 in the NFC Championship game that year. I have detested the Bears since

Let's Ram it!

Hmmm, well then, Wicked Lester, as an avid Rams fan back then, I'm very surprised you made no mention of the L.A. Rams' 1986 counter song to the Bears' "Superbowl Shuffle", titled "Let's Ram It!", w/ the team credited as The L.A. Rammers. The principal was exactly the same, of course - a charity song w/ the actual team members rapping about themselves (see chorus above - hey, I didn't write it, LOL!), along w/ a corresponding video. (The 14 team members featured on the single and video were, in alphabetical order: Ron Brown, Jim Collins, Nolan Cromwell, Eric Dickerson, Carl Ekern, Dennis Harrah, David Hill, Tony Hunter, Leroy Irvin, Gary Jeter, Johnnie Johnson, Barry Redden, Jackie Slater, and Woody Vann.) It, too, was issued in 7" vinyl, 12" vinyl, and cassette maxi-single formats, and the video was available commercially as well. (In fact, it was released by the same record label that put out the Bears' tune.) Like w/ "The Superbowl Shuffle", I have the cassette maxi-single. Although it failed to make the pop chart, it's just as catchy as the Bears' song, IMO. The Rams were the only other NFL team to make such a charity single at the time (mid '80s), so where was your pride?!? LOL!

I so remember that! The NFL Today did a story about it and played a big chunk of the video on their show, and I used to have a tape of it. Long gone though. I never did own a copy of the song. I looked for it in all the record stores back then, but never found it, so I figured it was mostly an LA thing. Think I'll check Ebay and see what I can turn up.

Are you sure Woody Vann is the name listed? I remember a Norwood Vann who played LB for the Rams in the mid-80s, but not a Woody. Could be a misprint.

Never saw the video myself. But then again, w/ a chorus like that, it's easy to see why it wasn't a hit (unlike "The Superbowl Shuffle"), LOL! I mean, how can you chant "Do you know how to Ram it?" and still keep a straight face?!? Ahh, gotta love them Rams...

I believe the single & video were a bit more plentiful in SoCal at the time, but I've since seen the single in old warehouse and cut-out stock here on the east coast as well. I know I've run across it in one form or another on eBay at least once in the past, but I have no idea how often it turns up there. Good luck...

"Woody Vann" is the name printed in the liner notes of the cassette maxi-single. And while I admit I don't remember that particular player myself, I don't see why "Woody" wouldn't be an appropriate nickname for someone named Norwood - I'm sure it's the same guy...

I found a 45 on Ebay, and "Woody Vann" is listed there too. Call me thick, but I never thought about "Woody" being a nickname for Norwood. But that is almost certainly right.

BTW, you didn't miss much by not seeing the video. From what I remember, it was mostly shots of players lip synching on the football field. Nothing like the Bears vid. Oddly enough, they were playing clips from "Super Bowl Shuffle" tonight on ESPN.

While we're on this subject, have you ever seen the clip of the Fearsome Foursome (at that time, Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy and Rosie Greer) doing a Temptations style performance on some show back in the 60s? That was hilarious! Merlin was not a good dancer! LOL
