Subject: R.I.P. Lanie O'Grady "Mary Bradford"

Written By: Ally on 9/26/2001 at 11:36 p.m.

Remember Medical Student "Mary Bradford" on "Eight is Enough"? Lanie, passed away this
moring in her trailer home outside of Los Angeles.
Lanie, was Only 46! A week away from 47!
Natural causes may be the reason for the sudden death. Lanie, had many years of drug abuse and just got back from re-hab not too long ago!!!

To anyone out there who may be addicted to drugs, get help before it's too late.

Subject: But The Thing Is

Addicts don't want help, Dave. All they want is thier next fix. You have to sincerely want to be helped before that help will do you any good. Case in point: a guy I worked with about 5 years ago came up positive for crack on a drug test. I work for the government, and the policy is that on your first offense you are sent to rehab; no choice if you want to keep your job. So he went, at no cost to him. Another part of the policy is that when you return to work from rehab you have to submit to periodic drug tests... well, even knowing this, this guy turned up hot again within 3 months of being back on the job. He didn't want to change and he didn't change, and he lost his job as a result. It's all about choice. Some people make the right ones and some people don't.

I do agree with all you've said, Lester: however, I was hoping that the stark reality of Ms. O'Grady's passing and why it occurred might be a sobering reminder of what will happen to those who will not or cannot kick the habit.

That would be good if it happens, with even one person. I didn't mean to take off on some social commentary -- I know we have the same basic philosophy -- but sometimes I just have to get on my soap box
