Subject: Vapours - Turning Japanese

Written By: Steve Brett on 8/17/1999 at 7:41 a.m.

OK Chucky - you got me. I'm from the UK and I still can't spot the masturbation reference in Turning Japanese (apart from the fact that he has her picture and he's on his own with it). I presume there's something hidden in the chorus lyrics but I've challenged all the staff in my department to spot it but no-one can as yet...

As you describe yourself as "in the know" on the subject, perhaps you'd like to drop me a quick line and let me in on this one too!!

Otherwise, cool site - keep it up!

According to the liner notes for the 1980's compilation album "Living in Oblivion, The '80's Greatest Hits, Volume 1" (EMI Records US) by Ira Robbins, it says, "A naughty slang expression for masturbation provided the otherwise polite Vapors [American spelling] with the title of their debut single." Where he got this information, I don't know.

the face one makes when one is....um..being master of one's own domain. "Turning Japanese" has long been a slang term in certain parts of the country for doing "that thing"

Hmm, masturbation. From what I've heard the song always refered to orgasms of any type, not specifically masturbation (as stated above, the face on makes). But seeing as the singer is discussing the object from a distance (looking at her picture) instead of face to face, masturbation seems logical.
