Subject: Did anybody REALLY have "big hair?"

Written By: Judy B. on 8/30/1999 at 3:46 p.m.

My aunt was telling me about the hairstyles of people she went to school with. She says people had HUGE poofed out hair, and bangs that were like a foot off their fore-head! She said one of her friends would go through a WHOLE can of hairspray in a few days! I was born in 1985, and I don't remember any thing at all like this. Did anyone actually remember hairstyles like this or is she exaggerating?

> High hair was definitely the norm for our school for about a three year period. You couldn't walk down a hall with out being gagged by some one with towering bangs respraying her hair in front of her locker.

One girl I was in Chemistry class with had a huge "poof" of bangs, and one day they got too close to the bunson burner and all that aerosol hairspray caught immediately on fire! Proof that "big hair" can be dangerous to your health!

Yes, we all had big hair. Mine wasn't quite that big, but it was FULL and curly and long. To tell the truth, it's still pretty big today - when I find a something that works I stick with it! It's a little smaller than 10 years ago, but still basicall the same

In 1990, I sat behind the girl who had the biggest hair in school in three different classes. Not only could I not see around it (it was huge), but every day in study hall she'd whip out this huge can of aerosol hairspray to re-spray her hair (the teacher saw no problem with this). She was nice enough to warn me to hold my breath, but my arm hairs felt shellacked stiff for the rest of the day.

This is real. The "hair bands" were called that for a reason.

Also, I remember girls in my class carrying several cans of hairspray with them, as they ran out so fast. They were BIG cans, too.

In 1985 I usually wore a small afro even though I experimented with a shag every now and then. In 1987 I wore a flat top for a little while.

>Hi! Seeing that my code name is Aqua Net (the best hair spray for BIG HAIR) I will have to say that you aunt isn't fooling.

How to have BIG HAIR::: When you are drying your hair, behend over and dry it upside down. Wile you are still upside down spray the roots with Aqua Net Extra Super Hold Aerosol hairspray then flip your hair back as you stand back up. If it falls you can tease the hair at the roots, spray again and fix it the way you want. For you bangs, just holf them out infront of your heaad with a brush or comb and stray them into place. It's sad but true we really did wear our hair that way. It was a lot of fun, but it took forever! Have Fun and try it at home. You can still get Aqua Net at any drug store. its cheap and it like glue in a can. I can't help but think of all the concerts we wnt to with big hair. I smell Aqua Net and I think oF Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Poison. Those were the days!!!

In 1985, as this girl was being born, I went through my Madonna stage. My eighth grade picture is scary. HUGE hair, teased and over-hairsprayed, cross earrings, ugly beaded necklaces, and I won't even go into the outfit unless I am paid for that information!

so my hair wasnt quite that big.....but i do remember having the tidal wave like bangs and thought i was SO cutting edge! lol! cause the rest of my hair was straight flat.....although i did have some friends in choir that thought my hair was the right lenght for the big hair look so one day they "experimented on me" whoa! my bangs stood almost straight up and the rest of my hair was pretty straight but still heightened...i still cant belive i thought i was SO cool that day! woohoo for big hair!

You sound like you know how to do "big hair" pretty good! What exactly did it look like when you were done. What did it feel like to have so much hairspray in your hair? How tall were your bangs?
