Subject: Does anyone know this song?

Written By: Karen M. on 9/15/1999 at 10:47 p.m.

Back in 1980, when I was in the 9th grade, I remember hearing a song with the lyrics "round and round in circles...". It's a slow song, but I've never been able to figure out either who sang it what the title of it was. Can anyone help? And no, it's not the Ratt song "Round and Round". Thanks.

Your date is just a little off, but I have a positive i.d.-in fact, it was always a personal fave of mine as well (I myself was in the 8th grade at the time). Your song is "Circles" by the soul/r&b group Atlantic Starr, which scraped into the top 40 on the pop charts in the Spring of '82 (and hit #2 on the r&b charts at that time). It was actually a midtempo dance number off their 1982 album, "Brilliance". However, that album is now long out-of-print in all formats, and has never been issued on CD here in the U.S. to date. But "Circles" has been included on no less than three different hits collections of Atlantic Starr's to date, and all of these were released on CD. From what I've seen, the best one to get is the most recent, simply titled "Greatest Hits", from 1997. It's still in print today on both cassette & CD, and is on K-tel's Dominion label! This one is superior to the others in that it also includes hits from the band's later years on the Warner Bros. label, in addition to their early material on A&M (e.g., "Circles")...

80smusicfreak, thanks for your response but I really don't that the song I'm thinking of was from 1982. I have old 'slang' books that I kept from 1980 that talks about it (but doesn't give the exact title). The style of the song does sound like it could be Atlantic Starr, but as you said they didn't chart until 1982 (I have the Billboard Top 40 Hits book by Joel Whitburn that backs that up). If I heard the song I'd know for sure but I'd hate to buy the CD without knowing for sure. I do like the K-Tel label a lot, though, as they've put out some really good compilations. I'm not sure what I'll do...

80smusicfreak, thanks for your response
