it helps to know where you are so we know what time zone you're in

I've checked in there a few times myself now over the last 2-3 weeks (usually between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m., ET), and have yet to find anyone around. However, ChuckyG, "deadgurl" did say it was 7:45 p.m. where she was, and her post on your message board is shown as being made at "7:49 p.m. EST", so it's logical to assume she's on ET!

No offense, ChuckyG, but confusing the matter further is the fact that your message board still shows posts as being made on "EST", instead of "EDT" (something I've never understood the short time I've been here). After all, we're not on "ST" right now, and in fact, most of the U.S. is on "DT" until October 31 (i.e., Halloween). Frankly, it boggles my mind that so few of my fellow Americans understand what those letters really mean, or know the difference between "Standard Time" and "Daylight Time". (Okay, I'm off my soapbox now! :-))

to be honest, I really wouldn't want to have to try and code that into the software to make the switch.. plus it's pretty much the convention to refer to the time as standard time since I've never seen anyone in the US not make the switch to daylight savings time.. though I still haven't advanced the time on my answering machine.. of course it's only a month or so until it's correct again...

Someone going by the name "raquel" was just in the chat room when I checked in (making it the first time I've ever found anyone else in there), but, unfortunately, she didn't respond to my posts. :-( Come on, people!

Well, obviously, somebody made a "switch" on your message board back on April 4 (i.e., Easter), when most of the U.S. went from "ST" to "DT". Because if the board really was still running on "ST", all the posts would be shown as being made an hour earlier (just as you claim your answering machine still does). As I write this, it's 3:15 p.m. EDT (which is technically 2:15 p.m. EST, since we move an hour forward in the Spring), yet when I post this, your message board will show it as being made at "3:15 p.m. EST", which is incorrect either way! Now do you understand what I'm saying??? Think about it-you're still going to have to change the time on this board come October 31, when we move back one hour to "ST"...

Sadly, it may be "conventional" among us Americans, but it's still wrong! In fact, this year we're on "DT" from April 4-October 31. If you do the math, that's just a few days short of 7 months, which is more than half the year-that means we're on "ST" only 5 months! That's right, every year we actually observe daylight savings two months *longer* than "ST"! Call it a pet peeve of mine, but really, this should be kindergarten stuff. Again, I don't understand why so many people have such a hard time w/ this... :-)

It's my understanding that there are, in fact, a very few extreme areas around this country that don't ever make the change...

Yeah, but if it's currently set so that the time is right only 5 months out of the year (i.e., "ST"), aren't you better off re-setting it to "DT", and leaving it that way instead?!? Ahh, but we Americans are a strange breed... ;-)

actually, the Unix server this runs on handles it for me, but I don't there is a command in Perl that allows you to easily detect wether you have entered Daylight savings time.. I know how Daylight savings time works...

well, actually, most people are taught this, it's just that we only encounter it twice a year, so I think most people tend to forget it...

they must not talk much with the rest of the country, otherwise they'd be constantly trying to figure out who is on savings time and who isn't

I think I'd rather have the time be slow than fast, it seems right that way, but maybe it's because I've been doing it for so long now that's why...
