Subject: MYSTERY SONG

Written By: Fast Times Fan on 11/24/1999 at 1:37 p.m.

This is for all the hard core fans of Fast Times at Ridgemont High out there. Or anyone who can help out in the "what's that song?" department.

The song in question appears in the TV VERSION of the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High (i.e. the one shown on USA, or TNT, TBS). This version utilizes the original music sound track. The music sound track on the commercially available video tape version of Fast Times differs greatly - a number of songs are dropped, substituted, etc.

Anyway . . . the MYSTERY SONG can be heard in the scene toward the end of the film where Spicoli is talking on the phone to his Stoner Bud (played by Eric Stoltz). (Dialogue: Know what this is? That's my skull! I'm so wasted!" Dialogue then talks about going somewhere to surf.) This scene occurs just before Mr. Hand makes his surprise appearance at Spicoli's.

In the background there is a song playing that is neither on the soundtrack album nor listed in the music credits at the end of the film. To make matters worse, the lyrics are hard to make out. It sounds like the vocalist is singing either "Late night in the city" or "At night in the city" or something like that. The dialogue drowns out and obscures the words of the song. The vocalist kind of sounds like Glen Frey (the only Eagle without a song on the sound track). I've checked through Frey's solo albums and can't find this song. The only other thing that I can say is that there is a predominant bass in the song. It starts off with a bass line that continues through the song. The bass line is somewhat like that in "Those Shoes" by the Eagles.

If anyone has ANY idea as to what this song is, please let me know.

Thanks!

Subject: MORE INFO ON MYSTERY SONG !!!

Written By: Fast Times Fan on 12/3/1999 at 5:34 p.m.

While the song with vocals only appears in the TV version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the MUSIC for the song does appear in the video version.

The song appears while Spicoli and "Jefferson's Little Brother" are taking their joyride in Jefferson's car. ("I'm driving, you navigate!") It's a bass-heavy song. (In the TV version and original sound track the song played during this scene is Sammy Hagar's "Fast Times.")

I have some additional lyrics for this Mystery Song.

The first verse starts off with something like: "Late night in the city . . . " Could be "Late night ON the city" or "Midnight in the city" or something like that. I can't make out anything else in the first verse as the dialogue drowns out the vocals.

The second verse begins, "Late night in the mirror / the lines on my face." Then there's something else I can't make out. Then it goes, "He's looking for trouble / and it ain't that hard to find."

Then the chorus comes up.

The first line of the chourus sounds like "Night ride, livin' on the edge." It could be "Night fly" or "Night flight" or something like that. But, it is definitely "Night-something" and it's followed by what sounds like "livin' on the edge." I can't make out the rest of the chorus.

I have a thought that it is a Glen Frey song that has never been released. The voice sounds familiar, a bit like Glen Frey. I also think this might be the case since all of the Eagles except Glen have songs on the soundtrack and in the movie.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is it SOMEBODY'S BABY by Jackson Browne who co-wrote TAKE IT EASY by the Eagles. Or IN THE CITY by THE EAGLES sung by Joe Walsh or was it a Sammy Hagar song?

Aj -

It's definitely none of the above. It's way too heavy to be "SOMEBODY'S BABY", plus the lyrics don't match up. It's not "IN THE CITY", the beat is not the same, plus the lyrics are different. I don't think it's a Sammy Hagar song, as the voice doesn't sound the same. (However, the MUSIC for this song was used in the video version to replace Sammy Hagar's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", which appeared in the original version of the film during the scene of Spicoli and Jefferson's little brother's joy ride. So, if you want to hear the music for this song, check out that scene on the videocassette version.)

Thanks for your help.
