Subject: Defining look of the 80's?

Written By: missy on 12/13/1999 at 10:08 a.m.

I'm doing a report for school on the different decades of the century. My decade is the 80s. I figured that this would be the perfect place to get info about this decade. One of the main things I need to know is a description of fashion/hair of the 80s. Can you sum up (in a few sentences) the following:

What was the defining "fashion" of the 80s: m/f What was the defining "hairstyle" of the 80s: m/f What was the defining "makeup look" of the 80s: female

Thanks so much for helping me out!!

Missy

How could we all forget the Miami Vice look? Cool slacks, $5 t-shirt and high gloss sport coat. There's also the topsiders with no socks. I distinctly remember one of my friends wearing a similar get-up at graduation in 1985. Other looks include parachute pants, Members Only jackets, Vans sneakers and anything Michael Jackson wore. Most of us (male and female) also wore our hair parted in the middle and feathered back, ala Farrah Fawcett as noted previously in another posting.

I would have to say the basic hair for the 80's was the Farrah Fawcett inspired "feathered" look, which also transformed into it's sporty Mary Lou Retton shorter version (kind of a bowl-cut).

Makeup pretty much consisted of blue or other pastel shades of eye shadow, often worn nearly to the eyebrows (ach!), black or the late 80's colored mascara, dark blush, and glossy pink lipstick (Molly Ringwald inspired, I think).

Nails were usually red, pink, or the new-wave blue or green- and press-on nails were all the rage in the mid-eightees.

Denim jackets and Guess jeans were very in, especially if they had holey knees, or zippers at the bottoms.

Leather bomber jackets became the rage after Top Gun came out.

For girls, large and colorful button-up blouses and tight stirrup pants or other stretch pants were the thing- usually with flat dress shoes. Keds also became very popular along with Oxfords.

Benneton and Mainframe were the popular brands with school kids, but 80's punkers made spikey Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure inspired hair cool.

My personal favorite was the laid back style of Belinda Carlisle and the Go-go's or the new trendy styles of Bananorama, and the Bangles.

Let's see, I was a Rocker, so my look was long hair, jeans, and a biker jacket. But, you also had the preps who had the early George Michael hairstyles, and even the ones that looked liek Boy George. Some girls even fashioned themselves after BG. Make up seemed to be teh more the better, although I personally didn't like it. That wa sfor girls, guys liek me had the typical black eyeliner, and black lipstick, and such. Kinda psuedo-rock/Goth look. Mo' black, mo' bettah! Except for the "weird" period where I had a Glam-rock year. Ya know, bright pink pants, and lots of bandannas, and bright make up, and the like. Like Motley Crue's Theatre of Pain album. I guess there can't really be a DEFINING look, as it was all experimental. I hope this helps a little.
