Subject: M + M + 20 years...

Written By: J. Gil on 1/24/2000 at 1:08 a.m.

A few days ago, my wife and my 14-month-old son were watching Treehouse Television(a Canadian cable channel for pre-schoolers). Like most toddlers he is captivated by music and loves to watch the videos for children's songs. One of these caught my attention - the female singer sounded and looked familiar. The next time they played the video I caught the credits, 'If I Were Not A Little Kid' by Martha Johnson, and then it clicked! Martha Johnson was the lead singer for the 80's group Matha And The Muffins (Echo Beach, Black Stations/White Stations, Cooling The Medium, etc...), later to be incarnated as M + M. It's really interesting to see what turns the careers of 80's artists took after their popularity peaked.

Wow! Someone else who remembers Martha and the Muffins. Seems like yesterday, but it was "far away in time" the first time I heard them.

Other 80s artists doing music for childrens shows and related include Rachel Sweet (wrote the music for Melissa Joan Hart's album during her "Clarissa" days) and Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO (composes the music for Rugrats, and is doing quite well for it). Is it coincidental that both Rachel and Mark hail from Akron,OH and both work with Nickolodeon projects?

Being Canadian, I had greater exposure to acts like M+M as well other Canadian artists from the 80's such as Men w/o Hats, The Payolas (Rock & Hyde), Rational Youth, Strange Advance (one of my faves), Rough Trade, Skinny Puppy, Violent Femmes, Trans-X, etc... As you say, these great memories seem like yesterday.

Here's a link to an M+M website.
