Happy Days ran until the 80s, and was far more popular than "Love American Style" which it was spun off from in the mid-70s, though I doubt that's what your looking for

Facts of Life was a spin-off from Different Strokes, but I don't know that I would consider that to be more popular

Empty Nest was spun-off from Golden Girls, yet I don't think that was more popular

but I think the most likely candidate is Family Matters, which was spun-off from Perfect Strangers, the mother Harriette was an elevator operator on that show (and it's refered to as a spinoff when I looked it up) Family Matters ran for about 9 years, Perfect Strangers ran for 7

The Simpsons, a spinoff of the Tracey Ullman show, has been running for 10 years at least!

good point, but the Simpsons weren't spun off until the 90s, unless you count their December 1989 Christmas special.. depends on how you define the question I suppose.. the Simpsons is probably what they're looking for though

But then again the original question asked about a spin off from a sitcom. Unless I'm much mistaken, the Tracey Ullman show was a variety show, not a sitcom. This is a good trivia question and I certainly hope the answer turns up.

that's true.. so I would assume that Family Matters would be the correct answer there...
