Subject: 80s Horror Flicks

Written By: 80sHorrorFan on 3/16/2000 at 1:07 a.m.

Although I do miss the 80s dearly, are there any favourite 80s horror flicks that you guys liked? I've been collecting horror flicks for a quite a few years now, and just find that 80s horror revolutionized the way we look at it today.

I can't believe no one has mentioned The Lost Boys-my favorite movie. It's not really scary, but its classified as horror. I also love Nightmare on Elm street and of course Trick or Treat!

I loved the Evil Dead movies, but not because they were scary. I thought they were hilarious. They fit the cheesy horror movie ideal, although I haven't seen the third movie, Army of Darkness. I don't know if that one was made in the 80s though. I thought Friday the 13th Part II was okay, it scared me enough, but Nighmare on Elm Street (the first one) was more boring then scary.

I liked the 1st "Nightmare on Elmstreet," the 1st "Phantasm," and "The Prophecy" (the one about the bear, not the more recent movie about deliquent angels). Also, one of my all time favorites is "The Changling" with George C. Scott - I think it was made in the 80s but it could have been late 70s. I am also a fan of horror movies and I especially like it when one contains elements that are truly creepy (i.e., does not simply go for the easy "shock" scene). I also like many classic horror movies. Although it was not made in the 80s, I would suggest for your collection (if you don't have it) the original B&W version of "The Haunting" (I didn't care for the recent remake). If you have not read Stephen King's "Danse Macabre" then you may want to look into it. This is his study of the phenomenon and progression of horror stories in American society.

Oh my gosh--I LOVE the Sleepaway Camp Movies!!! Also, I think the Nightmare on Elm Street movies are both scary and good. And any movies that have creepy dolls and toys, not so much the Child's Play movies (although I like them) but more like those 2 Demonic Toys movies. They're pretty obscure: straight to video, I'm pretty sure.

I happen to know Don Mancini personally (screenwriter & producer of all the Childs PLay movies). Yeah, sure Sleepaway Camp was a great 80s horror flick, but try watching it today, and you'll be surprised. If you guys want any good recommendations, just let me know...I also consider late 70s flicks as 80s horror.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the 1985 vampire flick FRIGHT NIGHT. I think that movie has 80s all over it. Pretty funny jabs at cheesy vampire flicks, good cast. Avoid the sequel.
