Subject: What's that one thing?

Written By: 80sHorrorFan on 3/18/2000 at 11:59 a.m.

Have you ever sat down actually thought about that one thing which defined the 80s? I often think of the smells, the blue skies, the fear of the Russians, the innocence of childhood, my first kiss, my first girlfriend, the movies & music, and certainly, the folk songs we used to sing in grade school.

I have this amazing feeling inside of me that I'll never let go. Yeah, those are just some of the wonderful things of the 80s...How about you guys? What defines it for you?

You hit it right on!!! Weekends, girlfriends, sunsets, parking music, not necessarily having sex, but if your friends saw your car at the park after dark they sort of created their own story. The 80's, such a shame we have to get older.

Boy, it would be hard to narrow it down to just one thing. I would have to say the music which, of course, is still a pretty broad topic. For me, I spent the early 80s in high school and the late 80s in college so those were special years for me (as they are for just about everyone). What I like is when an 80s tune comes on the radio and I get a flood of memories that takes me right back to those school years and all the things that went with them (the fashions, old girl friends, movies, social events, etc.). I'm in grad school now and recently I performed at a Mardi Gras party we put on. I played The Psychadelic Fur's "The Ghost in You" with an acoustic guitar and, after performing it, I said to everyone: "That was my high school you just heard."

For me, it's the big hair, the guitar solos, the uncoordinated outfits, and the way you could get away with interesting fashion trends in the 80s and no one made fun of you because they did it too. Nowadays, everything revolves around how you look and what you wear. Kind of sad. The 80s were a way better time!!!

Madonna belting out Into the Groove on stage at Live Aid captures it for me.

I started college in 1980. In 1984 I started my life in Corporate America. I wish I'd have enjoyed things more then. Here in Houston, the radio station Mix 96.5 starts an '80s show at 5:00 p.m. until midnight.

I wish I'd not been living in such a mental and emotional fog.

Take care.
