I remember in 6th grade the Sugarhill Gang. That was approximately 79/80. Three boys in our class memorized the words and "performed" it for all of us during an art class. The funniest part was the line "now I'm not as tall as the rest of the gang..." because the boy who took that part was the tallest in the class at 6'1" and still growing!

It is a cool song and I dont know who covered who but the music, melody is the same as that of GOOD TIMES by Chic which was also a hit in 1979.

Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow are the other rappers I remember back in the early days I liked.

> Actually, this could have two answers. People say that it was the Sugarhill gang because, there song "Rappers Delight was the first top 40 rap song. But I think the first rap group came a year before that, there was called the Cold Crush Brothers, led by Grandmaster caz. I think its good that people recognize the forefathers of Hip-hop. FYI: The first ever rap music video was made by a guy named Malcolm McLauren, it was called "Buffalo Gals". It appeared on MTV in 1983; the video featured breakdancers from the Rock Steady Crew. peace!

I thought the First Rap Music Video was Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight"? I know there was a music video to Kurtis Blow's, "The Breaks", Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" all before 1983. So are you sure the first Rap Music Video was shown in 1983?

>Yo Aj, just listining to your reply shows that you are true to your hip-hop roots, and to hip-hop itself. You are absolutely right, the first rap music video was in 1979 by the SugarHill gang. Malcolm McLauren's 'Buffalo Gals was the first hip-hop video with breakdancing. Sorry for any confusion. PEACE!
