Subject: Does anyone remember these songs?

Written By: TX on 5/8/2000 at 2:28 a.m.

When I was in high school they played this song with funny lyrics. The best I remember it was from around 84-86. I think the title was Edna. This was played a lot in the Houston area. Did anyone outside Houston ever hear it? If you live in Houston do you remember it? Does anyone have any idea who sang it?

The lyrics went:

Whip me beat me call me Edna Walk on me with spike heeled shoes on A bed of nails is what I snooze on

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is one of those songs you think you are the only one who remembers it. My question is does anyone remember it?

The song was from 84. It was titled "What's it gonna take (to make you love me)." It got some airplay for a short time. It may of made the hot 100 for a few weeks. The band was Fast Forward. I think the album was LIVING IN FICTION (that is what is listed as at GEMM). I would probably get a tape but vinyl is all they have.

The song was remade by Molly Hatchet on his No Guts No Glory album. To here a sound clip of the Molly Hatchet version go to the link, it might help you to see if you recall the song.

Sorry if I wasted your time.

Fast Forward's "What's it Gonna Take (To Make You Love Me)" failed to crack either the pop or AOR charts here in the U.S. (Never knew it was later covered by Molly Hatchet.) Yes, it came out in 1984. And yes, it was off the group's lone album, titled "Living in Fiction". Unfortunately, the album is long out-of-print, and has never been re-issued on CD here in the U.S. They were on the Island label, and were led by vocalist Ian Lloyd (he of Stories fame, which scored the #1 hit "Brother Louie" in the Summer of '73). "Living in Fiction" was issued on both vinyl LP (Island 90193-1) and cassette (Island 90193-4) here in the States. The cassette is currently on my want-list as well...

Wow 80smusicfreak you are good.

I would have never known "Brother Louie" and "What's it Gonna Take (To Make You Love Me)" were the same lead singer.

It is nice to see someone else does know this song. I wish I would have bought Fast Forward's "Living in Fiction" back in 84. If for know other reason but to see if it is as good as I remember. It has only been 15 or 16 year since I've heard it.

Do you have any idea what Ian has been up to.

80smusicfreak do these songs ring a bell.

Another song(s) I never here anyone mention is "I'm a Fighter" and "You've Got To Believe In Love" off (Johnny) "Van Zants" self titled debut album. The youngest brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant and .38 Special's Donnie Van Zant. I know he took over Lynyrd Skynyrd several years after the death of his brother Ronnie Van Zant who died in a plane crash on October 20, 1977 along with other key members of the Lynyrd Skynyrds lineup.

This tape I did buy in 85 when it came out and it does still rock. These two songs can be found on CD "King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents - Johnny Van Zant" album (I'm not a big fan of live albums).

Well, truth be told, I've never actually heard the song "What's it Gonna Take (To Make You Love Me)", as I've never owned Fast Forward's 1984 album, "Living in Fiction", in any format. :-) (As I noted in my previous post, the cassette version is currently on my want-list as well.) However, I do collect Ian Lloyd's material (both solo & in bands, such as Stories & FF), which is why I've been attempting to track down the FF album on cassette for about three years now. Yeah, as you discovered, the vinyl LP version can be found in plenty of places, but who owns a turntable anymore??? :-) In fact, I've actually met Mr. Lloyd a couple of times in the last 3-4 years, as he still performs semi-regularly in various clubs in NYC. Of course, I had him sign several of my Stories and solo cassettes of his backstage. :-) He's a cool guy, and is still releasing (darn good) albums of new material over in Europe. (Last I heard, he didn't have a U.S. deal, but was searching.)

I don't have it in my personal collection at this time, but I've seen the '85 Geffen album by Van-Zant that you have while out on my used record-store travels. "I'm a Fighter" was the lead single, and hit #16 AOR here in the U.S., but failed to cross over to the pop chart. On that song's moderate success, however, the album's follow-up, "You've Got to Believe in Love", just missed the "Hot 100", going to #102 pop (and #27 AOR). I don't recall ever hearing either song on the radio - but I think I'll grab the next copy of the "Van-Zant" album that I run across on cassette. :-) BTW, that was not his first album - The Johnny Van Zant Band released several albums on Polydor here in the U.S. in the early '80s...
