NBC May Take 'Freaks And Geeks' for a 1-Night Date May 24, 2000 6:10 am EST

By Josef Adalian

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - NBC might bring back the critically hailed but short-lived "Freaks and Geeks" for one night this summer -- but the odds of the show being revived elsewhere are growing longer.

NBC Entertainment president Garth Ancier said Tuesday the network is planning a three-episode mini-marathon culled from the show's five remaining unaired episodes. The event hasn't been scheduled, but it's likely the "Freaks"-fest would take place on a Saturday night in June or July.

After NBC canceled "Freaks," the network gave producer DreamWorks Television permission to shop the show around to other networks. MTV has been the most interested, but industry insiders said the cable outlet wasn't prepared to pay a high-enough license fee.

DreamWorks has most of the "Freaks" cast under contract through June 15, leaving little time for any last-minute deals to keep the show alive. Even if NBC goes ahead with its "Freaks" night, repeats of the hour-long comedy-drama could still end up on MTV or another outlet.
