Subject: An 80's Convention

Written By: MDC on 11/04/98 at 04:01 p.m.

I was thinking that next year sometime, we should organize an '80's convention. It would take a lot of people really wanting it to come together, and we would have to find sponsors, musical acts that would appear for next to nothing, not to mention a place and a venue. I haven't a clue as to how to go about organizing such an even, so if anyone out there does have a clue, leave a post here and maybe we could get something going. I think it would be a blast!!!

Also, hooray for Chucky for driving the undesirables out of our kingdom!!!

I love this idea...I think the major obstacle we would have to overcome is our lack of knowledge in arranging it. Who to contact and all that...if we are serious about this I would not mind putting my head together with some of y'alls to take it a step further....
Let me know.
P.S. I think Depeche Mode should perform and i get to give them a lifetime achievement award.... :)
Have a good one,
Dan

Is there any idea cooler than this one? Wow, I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to go about doing this one, but it sounds like a great idea!! I would be in, but I have to admit I'm pretty clueless.

The only thing I would suggest is a wide mix of music genres. Maybe Blondie among others for the new wave aspect, Poison or Def Leppard for the hair band/heavy metal crowd, Duran Duran and Culture Club because Diane and Lindsay said so, Depeche Mode because a lifetime achievement award from Dan is something to behold I'm sure, and for me, a little old school. How about S.O.S. Band, Zapp, and if we could get Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five back together...

Great idea anyhoo. Looking forward to additional postings on this one.

What a, like, totally tubular idea!!!!!!

I would love to be a part of putting this together, if you don't mind. I am a MAJOR child of the 80s. I can help with the decorating. I am very artistic and have hand painted t-shirts for about 7 years. I can also help supply the music. I am NOT a DJ by any means, but I do have a large collection of 80s music on cd.

I think one of the first things we would need to do is where to have this 80s convention at? Maybe St. Louis, Chicago, or Kansas City. I think it should be centrally located so everyone has a chance to show up without driving or flying too far. What do you think? Another thing, when should we have it? Why don't we have it around the same time MTV first came on the air, August 1st?????

What events should take place at the 80s con? We could have a costume contest for the most radical outfit or celebrity dress-up contest. We could also put together some sort of game show, like Match Game, and use 80s refernces to it. We could have a trivia contest. We could have a lyrics quiz: We give the lyrics, you name the song and artist. Or we could have some timteline quiz: put the events in the proper chronological order. And most important of all, as Prince put it so eloquently, WE GOTTA PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999!!!!!!!!!!! We must have a HUGE dance party!!!!!!!

Any other suggestions? Lemme know. thx

Thanks for all the posts. And a special welcome back to everybody's favorite, Dan Nero... I'm so glad you didn't go away!!!

Okay, about this '80's convention. Everyone that posted had some great ideas. Corn, I think August 1, 1999 would be the PERFECT day for the convention to start. I don't have a calendar handy, but it would be best of the starting date is on a Saturday. As far as location goes, how about in or around the Cincinnati, Ohio area? This is fairly centrally located, and has some great convention centers and accomadations. Plus, its cheap!!!

As far as sponsors go... I think an obvious choice would be VH1 or MTV. I am going to send an e mail to both with my idea, and see if it can pique any interest. I'll also talk to the editor of AQUATULLE magazine. There's also handy dandy Coca-Cola and Pepsi, who would sponsor midget jello wrestling if it gives them good promotion.

Also, I think that, though the MUSIC of the '80's will be an important theme, we will also need to have booths and celebrities from '80's tv shows, famous commercials and other pop culture icons, along with items from the '80's, such as toys, Atari, Rubik's Cubes, et. al.

Of course, we will need a great DJ that knows all the great '80's grooves. And catered food, of course. We will need to talk with a convention planner that could put together a package deal (air fare, hotel accomadations plus admission to the convention). What is the highest price you guys would be willing to pay for, say, a two day convention? I think between $250-$400 would be a reasonable PACKAGE deal, but I need INPUT here, guys.

Finally, I will be putting together a web site for this proposed convention, and I will post the URL once I have it up. This will be a gathering point for everyone's thoughts and ideas; this way, I can gauge if there will be enough interest to warrant such an event... not that I have any doubts.

So, Chucky, Dan, Retroraider, Lindsay, MDwork, Lindsay, and Corn Boy, star gathering together ideas. I really LOVE you guys...

Hello All!I Used To Post Here As TheScaredMan,But I Picked A New Name!I Have Some Ideas For This 80s Convention.
1.)An 80s Film Festival!Chuck,I Think You Should Take A Poll Asking Everyone On Here What The 10 Best Movies Of The 80s Are.You Can Then Tabulate The Results And The 10 Movies With The Most Votes Can Be Shown At A Section Of The Convention With A Movie Screen!
2.)How About A Break-Dance Competition For Those Who Enjoy It?
3.)Get People Who Sell 80s Stuff To Sell Their Stuff At The Convention!Vinyl,80s Clothing,Games,Toys...All Sorts Of Stuff!
Sadly,No Matter Where You Hold It,I Won't Be Able To Make It:(
I'll Be There In Spirit,Though!

Keep The 80s In Your Hearts!

Sincerely,TheBreaker!

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!! You have been here then!!!! No doubt!!

To what occasion did my humble region owe your presence?

In other words, why the hell were you ever in Huntington?

Cincinnati sounds great. This sounds exciting. A little intimidating though. I can't plan my way out of a paper bag on most days. But all the ideas sound good so far.
Although Huntington could have handled it, I promise. Just because nothing ever happens here, they would embrace it with open arms. (I would think so anyway.) But Cincy is good.

How About Simulcasting The Convention Online,So Those Of Us Who Can't Go Can Experience It Anyway?Chuck,You Could Post Pictures Of The Event!
Hopefully,This Thing Will Happen!
Wait A Minute...I Don't Know If Anybody Has Suggested This Already,But How About 80s Karaoke? What Do You Think?

Adios!

Sincerely...TheBreaker (Who Isn't Spanish)
