Subject: what song was this?

Written By: matt m. on 12/01/98 at 00:37 a.m.

On november 25, 1985, a musical group made up of British and Irish superstars (including Paul McCartney and U2) recorded a hit single that sold over three million copies. The proceeds of the album were sent to help the famine effort relief in Ethiopia, Africa.
Name the group and the hit song.

Hint:
-the group only lasted this one song.
-enspired by"we are the world"

I don't know the answer but was it a hit here in the US or was it just a hit in other countries?

Hm...wondering if this is a trivia question (to see if anyone gets it)...

Um...could you be thinking of "Do They Know it's Christmas"? I thought that was the thing that inspired "We are the World" -- shows ya how much I know! And...wasn't the group called "Band Aid"? Wait a min -- yeah -- that's my fave Christmas song!

Sorry...ever since I got out of a chat with Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran) and found out I had two questions answered by him, I've been in outer space....

Diane :)

Yes, the song is "Do They Know It's Christmas (Feed the World) and was performed by Band Aid and was released November of 1984, and immediately debuted at Number One in Great Britain, and was Number One on the American charts two weeks later.. The song was written by Sir Bob Geldof, and sold far more than three million copies baby, try fifty million!!! It came before USA For Africa's "We are the World", and was the inspiration for "Live Aid" which came the following year. For those interested, I actually have the lyrics for the song posted on my updated web site @ http://members.aol.com/popupvid/longlive.html Hope this helps...

It is "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by BandAid. Personally, I like the song, fourth favorite Christmas song, after Angels We Have Heard on High (always sung at midnight Mass), Christmas Time Is Here (Charlie Brown Christmas - says it all) and The Christmas Song (Nat King Cole - when you here it you know it's Christmas, plus probably the smoothest voice ever or at least tied with Francis Albert Sinatra, I know this isn't 80's rock but you have to give it up to them nonetheless). I think it does speak to the meaning of the season, that is, giving unto others. Plus, it was never over played here in Cincinnati on the radio at the time.

"Do the know it's Christmas"/Band Aid.

Question is, waht did Paul McCartney have to do with any of this? Yes he was in Live Aid (funny as it was), but I don't think he had any involvement in the making of the single.

Trivia, and this is an easy one. There were three Americans in that single (and God did they stand out), who were they?
