Subject: Favourite Depeche Mode song

Written By: Absolutely Vile on 04/22/04 at 8:47 am

Other people have started it, now it's my turn! Board alumnis should know I'm a HUGE Depeche Mode fan. :D So, for anyone else there who's a fan, what's your favourite song by them?I have several, too many to mention, but these would probably be tops on my list:

Shake The Disease
Get The Balance Right!
Master And Servant
Never Let Me Down Again
Tora! Tora! Tora!
The Sun And The Rainfall
...and any song sung by Martin L. Gore except Pipeline. :)

This may well upset AV and the rest of the Mode connoisseurs, but I much prefer their stuff when Clarkie was in the band...

...'The Meaning Of Love' was also a cracker (although he'd gone by then, I think...)

Well, "Tora! Tora! Tora!" was from the Clarke era (though it was written by Martin Gore). But...OK...Speak & Spell was a really good album, I'll give it that! I like several of his songs, even though he was really bad at writing lyrics. They include:

New Life
Photographic (especially the "Some Bizzare" version)
Ice Machine
Shout
Any Second Now (Voices)
I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead
...and yes, I still like Just Can't Get Enough

;D

The question is...what about the few Alan Wilder songs that saw the light of day? Two Minute Warning was good. :)

Oooo...out of my little mainstream mind here, AV...I only really ever got hooked on the singles...!

Mind you, I'll try and 'find' some of that earlier stuff...purely out of research...!

I'd have to say that my absolute favorite Depeche Mode song is:

Sea of Sin

Definitely one of their best songs that was never on an album. And I also like The Sun and the Rainfall too!  :)

Well, Vince was only around for the first album, so there were the songs on the album and the other songs and B-sides that didn't make the record! (However, I believe most of these songs can be found on the re-release of Speak & Spell on CD, the one with bonus tracks.)

"Everything Counts"

I can't believe I forgot this one!! I absolutely adore this song. The original single (especially the 12" single), not the live thing from 101.

"Route 66"

Not a Depeche Mode song! It's a cover they did for the B-side to "Behind The Wheel." It seems to be a favourite among Americans though.

Well my two cents worth says Vince Clarke made better stuff when he formed Erasure with Andy Bell.  ;D

My favourite Depeche Mode song's are 'See you', 'I just can't get enough' and Personal Jesus'. The beat to the last song is powerful.

Barrel Of A Gun  8)

Subject: Re: Favourite Depeche Mode song

Written By: pedestrianwolf on 05/24/04 at 2:22 pm

this is an extremely hard question for me.... i was, quite literally, raised on depeche mode.  speak and spell came out the year i was born.. my earliest memories are listening to depeche mode with my eldest sister.  hell, i was wearing depeche mode concert shirts in the third and fourth grades while everyone else was worshipping new kids on the block.....  where do i begin?

but not tonight (almost always my absolute favorite)
any second now
leave in silence
my secret garden
nothing to fear
two minute warning
and then..
get the balance right
lie to me
it doesn't matter
somebody
shake the disease
fly on the windscreen
sometimes
here is the house
little 15
clean
policy of truth
in your room (definitely not the remix- ruined the song in my opinion)
walking in my shoes
barrel of a gun
home
insight

yeah, i think that's a good start.... if i had to narrow it down to just a few, i'd pick
but not tonight
shake the disease
in your room
barrel of a gun
