Subject: Ultravox (Midge Era)

Written By: Rush on 05/08/04 at 7:58 pm

I think I'll go with Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, Love's Great Adventure and Hymn.  But I really could pick any number of songs.  I'll most probably change my mind by tomorrow.  ;D

And no I wasn't typing Midge Ure!  :D

I picked The Thin Wall for its rhythmic intrique, but I love them all.
My favorite mix of One Small Day is a "Club Version" which is on the b-side of the "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes" 12" (The "Extended" 12," not the "Special Remix" 12," though the latter has another great b-side, "Building").  Anyway, the OSD Club Version is REALLY heavy on the bass line, and adds some additional lines to the chorus.  Most highly recommended.

That might be solo Midge Ure. He has an album called The Gift which has the song "If I Was." I'm not sure there's a title track. I'll have to dig up my copy to find out. :)

I'm sure if you heard Vienna you'd remember them. I did when I heard it and I wasn't even around then!

I'd like to recant my choices!!! I've already voted, but I voted for standards. My favourite Ultravox - Midge era songs at the moment are:

Hymn
The Thin Wall
The Voice

Though all songs mentioned are excellent!! :)

Favourite songs not listed (off the top of my head) are:

Mr. X (from the Vienna LP)
White China (from the Lament LP)

I'm sure there are countless others... :) ;)

Much as I loved "Vienna" as well, CF, there was just something about "Lament"  :)

"The Thin Wall" is my favorite of all!  "White China" is sonically fascinating.  The CD re-issue has the extended version of "White China" (the EMI CD, not the knock-off CD from One Way records)
"Mr. X" is another one of my favorites.  Do you know the difference between "Mr. X" and the b-side "Herr X"?

Yes, there's a song on "The Gift" called "The Gift."

All my Ultravox/Midge Ure/John Foxx albums are on vinyl. :) But I'll check that out!

Yes, I have it on a CD (<gasp!> A CD?!?!) I just got called Ultravox Rare Vol. 1. The difference is "Herr X" is in German. :)

Yes, there's a song on "The Gift" called "The Gift."

I knew that! :)
