Subject: Mr. Roper vs. Mr. Furley

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 05/20/04 at 1:39 am

This one could go on either the '70s or '80s board. TV Land just ran a 48-Three's Company Marathon, so I was assessing the two landlords:
Stanley Roper played by Norman Fell (1977-1979, 1981)
Ralph Furley played by Don Knotts (1979-1984)

A vote for Stanley Roper is actually a vote for Stanley & Helen Roper (Audra Lindley).

I can't make up my mind, so I didn't vote just yet.

Mr. Roper...I always thought he and Mrs. Roper were hilarious.  I didn't care for Mr. Furley. (but I love Don Knotts as Barney Fife)

Uhhh, this is, by far, the strangest answer! :o
It's pretty much a dead heat with me, but Don Knotts' Ralph Furley wins by a nose.  I'm just a big fan of his physical comedy.  As Knotts said about the character, "you can't go too far with Mr. Furley."

The repartee between the Ropers was always classic.  Norman Fell also played a landlord in The Graduate, Mr. McCleery.
"You're not one of those agitators, are you?"
"I want you OUT OF HERE...because I don't LIKE you!"

I voted for Mr. Furley because it was hilarious seeing Barney Fife's laughable attempts at being a hip 70's swinger, but I also thought it was funny how Mrs. Roper always cracked jokes about Mr. Roper's impotence. (Too bad Viagra wasn't invented back then, that could've made for a funny episode!)

Mr. Roper wasn't impotent, he just wasn't interested. His thrill was clipping coupons and saving a buck on building supplies.

I went with Furley.  He had more personality and was a better actor (gotta love those loud suits).  I never cared much for Mr. Roper, but Mrs. Roper was hilarious!

Look for Mrs. Roper in the movie "The Relic".  She played a mortician with a certain flare for French, if you know what I mean.

Gotta go with Mr. Furley.  Loved his polyester suits and he had more personality than Mr. Roper who was a bit dull  (I guess I'm repeating what everyone else said here.)  I almost wish he was my landlord, he'd be a big improvement from who I have now.

Yeah, and I couldn't believe the stuff that was coming out of her mouth!  It was nothing like Mrs. Roper, but she was still cool as always.

She did The Relic during the same year she passed away (1997).

I haven't seen "The Relic."  I oughta see it just to see Audra Lindley as a smut-mouthed mortician.  There wasn't a Mrs. Furley.  There couldn't have been, that would have ruined the character.  It made since for him to chase the sultry widow Lana, but it didn't make sense for the ever-randy Jack to turn down Lana's advances.

She doesn't play a very big part, but it was cool to see her in another role.

A married Furley wouldn't have been as good...his playing a clueless, swinging, bachelor-wannabe is what made the role great.

I also wondered why Jack didn't hook up with Lana.  She didn't look bad for an older woman, and she had money!

Hey Moo

I know where you are going with this, but that's "George" Roper, and it was 70's as well.

Having said that, I don't disagree with you.  :)

I didn't realize it until reading about his death in the newspapers, but he was also in the B&W D-Day movie "The Longest Day."

I thought both we're good and watched every episode of the show. However I gave the vote to Stanley Roper. In order for Furley to be funny in a scene he pretty much needed to have the kids in the scene with him. Stanley Roper and his wife were funny with or without the kids in the scene. Look at the facts who was good enough for a spinoff? True the spinoff only lasted 1 season but the first few episodes we're quite funny. Did Furley go into a show by himself?

He gets mine also!!!!!!! -- I love him :)

I have always wondered: Why do they care if Jack lives there with the girls? I mean why do they have to pretend he is gay??

WHO CARES IF HE LIKES ONE OF THEM??
