Subject: VH1 25 Greatest Power Ballads

Written By: woops on 06/03/04 at 7:56 pm

Today, VH1 re aired this 2003 special hosted by Jenny McCarthy.

Unlike "When Metal Ruled The World" and their current "100 Metal Moments", this special included a couple stinkers. (Written in red)

25. Lita Ford featuring Ozzy Osbourne "Close My Eyes Forever"
24. Van Halen "When It's Love"
23. Staind "It's Been Awhile"
22. The Scorpions "Still Loving You"
21. Queensrchye "Silent Lucitidy"
20. Tesla "Love Song"
19. Kid Rock "Only God Knows Why"
18. Cinderella "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)"
17. Heart "These Dreams"
16. Nickleback "How You Remind Me"
15. Skid Row "I Remember You"
14. REO Speedwagon "Keep On Loving You"
13. Lenny Kravitz "Again"
Good song, but doesn't belong on this list.
12. Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home"
11. Metallica "Nothing Else Matters"
10. Whitesnake "Is This Love"
9. Night Ranger "Sister Christian"
8. Def Leppard "Love Bites"
7. Poison "Every Roase Has It's Thorn"
6. Guns N' Roses "November Rain"
5. Bon Jovi "I'll Be There For You"
4. Creed "With Arms Wide Open"
:P What the ... is this doing at #4!?!
3. Kiss "Beth"
2. Aerosmith "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"
They had better like "Dream On", "Angel", & "Cryin".
1. Journey "Open Arms"
A decent song from a band I dislike, but would rather listen than the songs highlighted in red.

VH1 had a similar countdown on their short lived "What's Your 20?" that's a bit better than this list. Mainly because it was ranked by their viewers.  8)

Unfortunately, I don't have the list. But I have the videos on tape...with a couple omitted (that I don't care for).
:)

Any thoughts? Good or bad.

'Home Sweet Home' by Motley Crue is the best power ballad ever. There is no question of this. "Beth" is lame and surpassed by an infinite magnitude by "Forever". "I'll Be There For You" is nowhere near as tear-jerky as "Always". Nothing from Nickelback, Creed or Staind should make a Top anything list unless it's the Top Worst. "Can't Fight This Feeling" is better than "Keep On Loving You".

Hmmm... Well that's slightly better, but "Home Sweet Home" should still be higher on the list. And "Burnin' For You" should be there, too. :)

Here's Retro Radio Network's poll of Top Power Ballads from 2 years ago.  This was turned into a top 25 show. Foreigner just edged out Cheap Trick.

Power ballads are part of my lifeblood. Currently, I've been listening to "Open Arms" from Journey, "Tearless" from Iceman, "A Flame For Freedom" by DragonForce, "Hatsukoi" by Sayaka Minami, and countless others. But still, I think Trail Of Broken Hearts (from Dragonforce) deserves to be No. 1 on the list.
