Trading Places

You'll notice there's a difference between the movies Eddie acts in, and the movies Eddie controls.  "Harlem Nights" was not on the poll!  That movie was terrible, and the character Eddie carved for himself "Quick" was a two dimensional hustler/mach man.  Insufferable.

I know many people love "Beverly Hills Cop"...

Look man, I ain't fallin' fo'no banana in my tailpipe!

But I seriously think "Beverly Hills Cop 2" was even funnier!

Axel: Does the steering work on this thing?
Billy: I'm steering!
Axel: Well, do the brakes work?
Billy: I don't know, I haven't tried'em yet!

Axel: Are you driving with your eyes open, or are you 'using the force'?

But in all truth, #3 was terrible. Any other thoughts on this?

I am agreeing with Sylence and RockandRollFan. I have a soft spot for Coming to America.

Just my opinion -

I think John Amos, Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones were mostly what made "Coming To America" as funny as it was. I don't think Eddie Murphy could have carried the movie alone and have it be as funny and entertaining.

I totally agree (not sure about James Earl Jones - he was alright I suppose in a straight role). Arsenio Hall did some good impressions of women in the nightclub (I wanna tear you apart - and your friend too, ha! ha!) John Amos was delightfully human in his role as the burger entrepeneur, MacDougal.

Coming to America has to be my all time favorite. Arsenio Hall's facial expressions still keeps me rolling ;D.

That name was MacDowell.  "They're McDonald's, I'm MacDowell's, they have the Golden Arches, I have the Golden Arks...They use a sesame seed bun, my bun has no seeds..."

I chose BHC w/ Trading Places as my 2nd.

I love Bronson Pinchot's character "Mr. Ax-well" he called him. I was just ready at anytime to hear him say "don't be ree-dic-u-lus"  :D

Harlem Nights gets my vote.  Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor!  If you haven't seen it, then do yourself a favour and hire it out.

Fluffy.
:)

I voted "Coming to America"..but had "Harlem Nights" been on the list, that would've gotten my vote.  I'm fairly new to the "poll world", and hadn't really realized about the "Other" option.  Sure, it has some, IMO, STUPID parts, but overall, I find it really funny.
My favorite scene would have to be that part where the one guy at the shootout was firing that teeny weeny gun, and the other guy (I think it was Arsenio Hall) kept yelling at him "Why you gonna be shooting that little thing?!?"..but it might just be tied with the scene where Della Reece is harrassing Quick about "shooting off her pinkie toe"... ;D

I have to go with Coming to America. Then in second place the BHC movies tie. You didn't get much funnier than Eddie Murphy in the 80s!

I liked Beverly Hills Cop II the best becuase the formula was already there from the original Beverly Hills Cop, so it was kinda like a modern day Three Amogies  :)

Trading Places.  I love the scene where the Duke brothers are giving their butler his Christmas bonus -- a crisp, $5 bill.  The Duke brothers are beaming at their own "generosity", while the butler says in a resigned tone of voice: "Five dollars.  I think I'll go to the movies.  By myself."

It's interesting to me how Eddie Murphy has remade himself into a star of family-oriented comedies, such as "Dr. Doolittle", "The Nutty Professor", and "Shrek".  Who would have predicted this based on his roles from the 1980's?

Harlem Nights is a very divisive movie, as I loved it and thought it was hilarious. But it's one of those titles that one either loves or absolutely hates.

My vote went to Trading Places, with a VERY close second to Coming To America.

I think that Eddie Murphy has always made good movies. Someone forgot to mention Best Defense from 1984 as one of his worst movies.  And that came during the same time that Beverly Hills Cop was a massive box office hit. It just depends on the script that he is given. Even Eddie has said that there were movies flops he made that he didn't like. I'll say this about the kid movies like Daddy's Day Care that he's done. The young audiences that watched Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop in 1984; they have kids now, so Eddie's attracting their kids. So Eddie wins both audiences that way.  He was so funny in his animated voice in Shrek.
