Subject: what is an 80's kid?

Written By: Chrisrj on 07/11/04 at 4:43 pm

I was reading on another website that, "to be an 80's kid(or any other decade), you'd have to have been able to have clear memories of every year as a child," or something like that.

I don't find this true at all, because even though I was born in 1980, I still did all the other things 80s kids did back then (Nintendo, Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Ducktales, MTV), so I still think I'm a true 80s kid, even though I wasn't truly around for 1980-most of 83.

What do you think?

I think an 80's kid is someone who identifies the most with the 80's.

I was born in 1971 but consider myself a child of the 80's.  I don't remember much about the 70's...too wrapped up in myself to notice the rest of the world.

i too was born in 1971 but the 70's mean nothing to me, nor can i recollect anything 70's other than garanimals and drug induced shows like puff n stuff.  you have to be old enough to understand life in the 80's and how it changes you, affects you, molds you.  you have to like it, want it, and become it, not just be thrown into it with no knowledge of it being cool or not, or if truly like it or not.

from arcades, tv shows, government, music, clothing, economy, all these things make up your environment and influence you.  a child born in the 80's would more likely be able to understand the 90's better with a more mature mindset.

i am proud to be a gen-x'er.  i feel bad for baby boomers and this younger generation.  they sure missed out growing up with alot of great innovations in our culture.  i feel sorry they they are not as cool as my fellow generation.  we rule.  8)

I think to be an "80s kid" you would need to be old enough for the 80s to have helped define who you are in some way. This tends to happen around 10 years old and over. Even though the times before that influence you also, it's not until around that age that you start to really understand what's going on in terms of politics, fashion and musical trends, social trends, etc. In my case, I was born in 1969, and even though I started becoming aware of music and culture in the late 70s, it wasn't until the year before I started high school (1982) that these began to really have an impact on me at a personal level. Therefore I would consider myself to be an "80s child". I can remember being aware on events in the 70s like the withdrawal from Vietnam, the dismissal of the Whitlam government, waiting for two hours to see "Star Wars" when it came out and a few other things, but they didn't impact on me the way that New Wave music, heavy metal, Live Aid, Ronald Reagan, the Falklands War, nuclear standoffs and other events did in the 80s.

Yeah I think you're an 80s kid, I don't think you have to remember every single year.  It's not like you were born in 1991 or something.  You were born in 1980, so you were around then, and you did grow up back then.  Granted I'm sure most of your 80s memories centers on the late 80s,---but I think that still counts to get you into the "exclusive club" as it seems to have become.

Some people that were born in the late 60s and early 70s can be real anal and overprotective about the whole "80s kid" thing, with rules that you have to remember every year super clearly.  I mean I was born in 1975, and I only have the vaguest, vaguest memory of 1980 and 1981.  But that certainly doesn't disqualify me from being an 80s kid.  Now ofcourse there is a difference between the teenage and young adult culture of the 1980s, and the child culture of the 80s.  The high school and college kids back in 1983 that were going to Duran Duran concerts were living in another world from me.  It overlaps for some people though, like myself who was becoming a young teenager in the very late 80s.  (I started my freshmen year of high school in the fall of '89)

to be an 80's kid should mean that music, movies, girlfriends(boyfriends),the best years of your life are based in the 80's. Born in 69', I don't vividly remember anything from the 70's that well and knowing exactly what year anything truly came out. i'd say junior high years and up.the fun years ya know!!!!

To be an "80's kid" means that you were either a child or teenager in the 80's. I was born in 1979, and even though I was just a young kid, I have a ton of memories from all the way back to when I was 3. Therefore, it just depends on what you are able to recall, not how old you were during the 80's.

Im my opinion, to be an 80s child as in childhood, preteen, and teenager, you have to be born between 1970 to 1980.  Lucky for me, I have a strong memory.  I was born in 1977 so I remember the 80s very well.  I think that my sharpest memory of the 80s started from 1980 when I was 3 to recent.  From 1982 to 1987, I was in grade school.  I had good times and bad times.  I was sent to a foster home in early 84 because my mother was an alcoholic at the time.  I was in a foster home for a year and a half until in 1985, my father took me into his care.  I had a litte rough time, but nevertheless, I had good times, too.  I remember when I had Smurfberry Crunch cereal when I was 5 and 6.  I remember hearing Alvin and the Chipmunks theme song for the first time in 1983.  I remember when my big brother and I went to the haunted house in Salvation Army in 1982.  I remember having a yellow music box at 5 years old in 1982, and my mother used to put it on for me before I went to sleep.  I remember watching Solid Gold, Dancin On Air, etc.  I remember when Power99 FM first came out in 1982 because I remember the commercial of it, and it was a Power 99 sign with a lit up woman dancin around it.  I remember when I ran away from home after school, and I would go to a friend's house.  This all happen before I hit 10 years old.  In 1988, they changed the elementary school where I was at to an elemiddle school (K-8).  So, instead of going to a separate middle/junior high school, we stayed in the same school, so from 1988-1991, I was middle school age.  We were the first 8th graders to graduate in 1991.    I would tell you the rest, but that's all for now.

I think to be an 80s kid, you have to be born between 1968 and 1981. If you were born in 1982, you would have a clear picture of around 1989 and 1990.

Nicole, your post brought about your life brought tears to my eyes. You look about 18.  I was born in 1970. I remember the 70s and the 80s. I have a great memory anyway. I remember kindergarten.  I remember the decades mainly through musical. "Let's Get Physical"  often runs through my head as an early 80s hit.

I was born in 67 so I am technically a child of the 70s but my life was shaped by the 80S most of my obsessions center on the 80s because thats when I was in high school.  I think we start to develop who we are going to be for the rest of our lives in high school.... before high school we're still figuring things out and trying to please our families but in high school we are starting to find our indiependence and start searching for things we identify with that we can call our own.

Well Im still seeking that independence that you speak of lol !!! I try to please everyone and thats' the problem.  In high school I tried NOT to please my parents at all.  What is most shameful is my hair is still big.  Really, Ive never crossed over to sleek straight hair. I had the nerve last night to try to recreate my high school photo hairstyle.

oh you have got to go to say cheese and post that high school photo....please ;D

I live in Santa Barbara there is one hairstylist here so I have to drive an hour to get my hair done. I hate getting my hair done...so it just looks like crap all the time.

BTW Chris you have to think about what makes you more nostalgic.  That yearning feeling the longing to go back to a certain time... do you feel more nostalgic about the 80s or the 90s?  Your answer defines what kind of kid you are.

IMO:

1967 and older: Too old to be affiliated with '80s kids trends unless if they enjoyed them with their own kids.
1968-69: Witnessed the very start of the '80s right as their childhood was giving way to teenhood. They're strictly '80s teens and basically '70s kids.
1970-71: Caught some of the "big kid" trends at the start of the decade (and late '70s) such as Star Wars, Garfield, and second generation video games. Still are classically '80s teens and are in the same "brat pack" generation as the 1968 and '69ers being core Gen Xers.
1972-73: Mid-late '80s teens, but early '80s "big kids". Likes The Smurfs, Simon, and early handheld electronic games. Identifies about evenly with '70s and '80s kids trends.
1974-76: Early-mid '80s kid, late '80s/early '90s teens. The "He Man" and first wave of Cabbage Patch Kids, Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears lovers. Loves 8-bit video games and Pocket Rockers.
1977-1978: Pretty much the ideal age to be an '80s kid, having their earliest memories right as the decade started and becoming a teen right after the decade ends and gives way to the "90s culture". The peak GI Joe/Early NES/G1 Transformerholics.
1979-1981: Late '80s kids overall, but could get into some of the early '90s. The epitome of '90s teens, being present for the grunge, Clueless, and start of the teen pop era). The ALF/Real Ghostbusters/Gummi Bears cohort.
1982-1983: Transitional '80s/'90s kids (the TMNT sub-generation). Still seen as '90s teens overall, but also a strong part of the Y2K age given that these are true Millenials and don't support grunge as much as their older peers.
1984-1986: Early-mid '90s kids with some memories of the '80s-'90s transition. They are seen as Y2K-era teens. The Power Rangers/Goosebumps/Babysitters Club cohort.
1987-1989: Too young to be affiliated with the '80s trends when current, but with some trends (mainly from the later part of the decade) lingering on well into the '90s, such as TMNT, 8-bit video games, and cassette tapes, can relate to them better than those born in the '90s and later. Mid-late '90s kids overall, and are core '00s teens.
1990+: '80s trends are completely before their time and are nostalgic curiosities. These are the digital natives, with the Internet becoming popular early in their childhood and social media becoming popular while in high school for the oldest members of this description.

This person born in 1967 sees a flaw I. Your assessment. 1st of all for me to enjoy the 80s with my own kids means I'd have to been a teen mom.  This is why it's ridiculous to pinpoint things by year. Everyone has their own experience.

Experience is shaped by cultural, economic factors. Race and socio-economic factors inform how we view and experience the world.  Region factors what we are exposed to and how we were raised - what our families and friends exposed us to.

The year I was born has nothing to do with it.

I was born in holland in 1967 but I was raised in America.
Infact I spent the 80s in California.

My experience is vastly different from what it would've been if I'd stayed in holland.
It's vastly different from people I went to school with because we had different rules and regulations at home.

Just like your experience is different because of HOW you grew up not necessarily because of WHEN you grew up

I collect action figures, barbies and lunch boxes.  And most of my collection is from the 80s.... even tho I was born in 67 and I also have current stuff.... Because I like what I like!

I too was born in 1980 and I can remember every year since 1982. I have unclear, vague memories of 1981, only random things like songs, other things. I remember EVERYTHING about the 80s. I think 80s kids are people who were teens(13 to 19) and children(2 to 12) during that decade. So yeah, I'm an 80s kid because I spent my entire childhood in it.

So was I, although my earliest clear memories date back to 1984. Anything I could possibly remember before then is rather fuzzy. However, I do have memories of hearing certain songs on the radio (particularly in the car) when I was little.

Songs seem to be what many of us remember.  I think it's because we unconsciously assign a soundtrack to times in our lives.

Well let's work back on this one. Let's say good solid memory comes at age 7 yrs old. I'll discount 1989 and only count 1988 as a good proper last 80s year. So 1988 minus 7 yrs would be 1981. I'd say anyone born 1981 or earlier would be an 80s kid.

I have very good friends born in 83 and 84, and they're total 90s kids. Hardly know any non-mainstream 80s references.

Hmmmm...I think an 80's kid is a person that is born near the 1980 mark one side or the other and remembers MOST of the 1980s. I was born in 1979 and my memories are fuzzy up until about 1982 and, from there I have a good recollection of everything afterwards.

I really liked Madonna, Wham!, Prince, Bananarama, A-ha, Duran Duran and later on Pet Shop Boys, Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue. Cartoons I loved include The Gummi Bears, Wuzzles, Ducktails, The Raccoons, He-Man, Thundercats and Transformers. The only thing I missed out on was the Atari console era in the early 1980s (which probably wasn't a bad thing really) and the NES/Sega Master System consoles later on. My parents didn't have much money but we did have an Amstrad CPC464 to play with. What is great is I have an Amstrad emulator that allows me to play games instantly without the long boring loading times. :)

What is great is I have an Amstrad emulator that allows me to play games instantly without the long boring loading times. :)

Loads Howard. I managed to find a stack of ROMS (games) to download and it's great playing old favourites again like Joe Blade 3, Jack The Nipper 2 and the Dizzy games.

People who remember at least half the decade AND were kids in half the decade or more. People born from 1972 to 1982. 1972 and 1982 are pure hybrids and 1973-1981 are more 80s kid than not.

1975-1977 would be the sweet spot for 80s kids and are the age range most likely to love the 80s and the 90s at the same time.

If you remember most of the decade as a kid than you're an 80's kid!  ;)

The early '90s Guy would step in and tell you though that both were readily available in second hand stores (first hand for the NES up until around 1995) through the 90's, with true '80s kids culture like Richie Rich, Intellivision, new episodes of Fraggle Rock, Starriors (another Star Wars knockoff), and plush Ewok toys gone by 1990, just like being a Pokemaniac doesn't make you a '90s kid, but an '00s kid.

I remember many things I did in my own life during the decade. ;) However, I have no clear memories prior to about 1984, the year I turned 4.

What if I had a TV with rabbit ears and a dial? ;D

Just kidding. I wasn't alive in the '80s.  :-X

What is this? The 70's? 80's TV's already had buttons and cable was commonplace by then. Geez, you don't even really know the 80's past 1982. ::)

All those are '90s things. The real '80s were from 1978-1983.

Well, considering I still enjoyed certain "kids" tv programs in the early 90s, possibly so. Then by the time I got into junior high it kinda faded out for me.

What does everyone here think of the 1972-1982 definition of an 80s kid?

Yes. 1982'ers are the last of the 80's kids. 8)

To me 1972-1982 with 1972 being a 70s/80s hybrid and 1982 being a 80s/90s hybrid. While 1973-1981 being mainly 80s. This is my own little opinion anyways. Obviously the way people grow up differ even if they're the same age.

True - I find if you had older siblings, you'd be exposed to more pop culture and stuff you wouldn't normally have watched / listened to as a young kid.
