Subject: You really think the 80's ended in 1989?

Written By: LMS on 08/06/04 at 8:45 pm

or in 1990 for those who think the 80's began in 1981?

In my opinion, the 80's style, music and nightlife finished in 1991 or maybe 1992, when the grunge came to the scene strongly and changed everything.

There're albums such as "Achtung Baby" by U2 (1991) and "Violator" by Depeche Mode (1990) that I still consider as sound of the 80's. To name just a few.

What do you peole think about this issue?

I never thought about it, but you are probably right.  I don't think anyone really cares though.  But the late 80s did still had an influence on the early 90s.  Years before, there was a huge debate on how much of the 70s went into the 80s.  Since the early 80s still seemed like the 70s.

the decade ended in 90. most movies and music that was released in 1990 was produced in 1989, so therefore those media still have that 80s vibe. for me the 80s came to an end when grunge came out in '91-'92.

So, seems that the grunge scene was the main responsible to make disappear the 80's vibe.

Jeet D, I also think the early 80's (I would say the years '80, and '81, and probably '82) were still more similar to the 70's than to the actual 80's. For instance, TV series like Fame seem more 70's-ish.

Id totally agree with the decade ending once grunge started in 1991.  About the starting of the decade, I think it kinda started in the late 70s when disco started.  The whole thing about dance and flashy clothes and flashy atmosphere.  Also a lot of 80s bands started during the last few years of the 70s (for example Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Toto, J Geils Band).

Grunge started in places like Olympia, Washington, as early as 1984.  Grunge bands such as Soundgarden and Nirvana were big alternative bands by the late '80s, but "grunge" didn't become a household word until about 1990.

For personal reasons, the '80s definitely started January 1, 1980, but ended in June, 1989.  I have my own reasons for saying so.

So it's the Grunge that did it ha? That's an interesting theory (and porbably correct as well). Anyways, they say that fashions tend to be recycled so I think that the 80's stuff will make a comeback sooner or later. What do you think?

I already can see 80's influence on alot of the younger fashions now. A quote from Uptown Girls "the 80's are making a comeback, didn't you know?" I thought it was  great line.  8)
