I have absolutely no idea why I wanted to bump this thread after 6 years but thought it was cool, lol.

For me, the best new wave song is probably a toss up between 'Big in Japan' by Alphaville and 'Just can't get enough' by Depeche Mode.

In the late 80's the music of Enya was described as New Wave, so for me the best New Wave song has to be Enya's Orinoco Flow.

In the 1990s the modern rock/alternative station I listened to played Enya regularly.  Especially tracks from Shepherd Moons...

Pretty much anything from Duran Duran or The Cars.

I don't think I agree with that, Philip. Enya was involved in something totally different to almost every commercial group on the planet back then and into the mid 90s. I do know other bands (including Danny Wilson of all groups) have been classed as New Wave but don't fit into that description. I do like Orinoco Flow from 1988, Carribean Blue and Book of Days (both 1991) and Anywhere is (1995).

There again, the Punk music of the mid to late 70's was first at first called New Wave.

'My best friend's girl' was in a chart of best songs (not sure what the context was) about 10 years ago on radio. Loved it and the song 'Magic'. 8)

That is true. I have read that New Wave split or branched away from punk and went into another direction as early as 1976.

For me, it's gotta be Louise Tucker and her Classically inspired 'Midnight Blue' from 1983.  This just missed the Top 40 in both the US and the UK, but went on to become the 51st best selling single of 1983 in Canada where it reached #2 (She would've reached #1 had Thomas Dolby not blinded her with science)

Good one, printer, if you're still alive and all.

There are many I like, such as:

Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson
Brass in Pocket - The Pretenders
Senior Service - Elvis Costello
Cars - Gary Numan
Our House - Madness

Talking Heads: Once In A Lifetime

This song draws from New York Minimialism, Afro-Pop, Rock & Roll, and Southern Gospel.  A great blend of stuff.

Wonderful song, which is based on the theme of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique.

"Once in a Lifetime" features a positively sick EVERYTHING.  It's one of my favorite songs ever!

Say...AMC was showing "Ghostbusters" this morning.  David Byrne reminds me of Louis Tully in the OiaL clip.

I absolutely adore that song, but it's not really in the realm of New Wave.  Roxy Music was more post-Glam/New Romantic.  New Wave and New Romantic bifurcated at Spandau Ballet "True."

"New Wave" really stopped being applied to bands in 1984.  The next big thing was "Alternative."  WFNX Lynn/Boston described themselves as "Alternative" going back to about 1984.  We also had terms such as "College Rock."  The only guys who didn't like some of those college rock bands were guys disguised as Larry The Cable Guy and singing "Sweet Home Alabama"!

Devo doesn't like their stuff being posted on Youtube.  Like they don't have enough money.  Hey, maybe they don't.  I dunno.

Blondie: Heart of Glass
Ian Dury and the Blockheads: Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
Laurie Anderson: Walk the Dog (b-side of "O Superman")
Gary Numan: Cars
M: Pop Musik
Elvis Costello: Oliver's Army
A Flock Of Seagulls: Space Age Love Song

"Saved by Zero" was used in a car commercial a couple of years ago and it really freaked some people out. It's the way it's sung I guess, that some found very odd/depressing.

Saved by Zero: I vaguely remember the story behind the song…

No, that's not car commercial material.  It must have been for 0% financing rackets.

Anyway, it's like using "Maneater" to advertise your restaurant.
:-\\

I don't think anybody picked up Human Leagues "Toyota City."

Possibly the only pop song to use the word "contravened" and employ an electric drill as an instrument!

One of my favorite songs.  I would classify it more as post-punk than new wave.  You'll notice, though, that New Order is known as a new wave band, and songs such as "Age of Consent" were rooted in "Love Will Tear Us Apart," so you could call LWTUA new wave.  You could also call the Velvet Underground new wave.

Personally I can't pick the best new wave song there's so many but when I think of New Wave these artists fit into that category.

Kids in America- Kim Wilde
Privated Idaho- B-52s
It's My Life- Talk Talk
Dont You Want Me- Human League
The Tide is High - Blondie
Ive Got You- Split Endz
Love Plus One- Haircut 100
Cars- Gary Numan
I Melt With You- Modern English
Tainted Love- Forgot the name of the group

So many more but I'll stop for now

Not exactly.  VU had a cool, detached manner you find in some New Wave...but VU certainly was not New Wave.  You might call it proto-New Wave.
