Subject: Good Songs... Bad Music Videos

Written By: woops on 08/19/04 at 2:31 am

Here's some examples or good or OK songs with awful music videos, IMO:  :P

Kiss "Tears Are Falling"
Huey Lewis & The News "Hip To Be Square"
Van Halen "Pretty Woman"
Bon Jovi "Runaway"
Falco "Der Kommissar"
Pat Benatar "Love Is A Battlefield"
Wham "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" (actually a 'guilty pleasure', but the video is plain unwatchable  :P)
Winger "Seventeen" (Though it's the only  song from the band  I like  :D)
Stone Temple Pilots "Sour Girl" (Not from the '80's, but it's bad enough to be mentioned on this topic)

I agree - "Love Is A Battlefield" was a good song but a HORRIBLE video!

Yeah !  "Choose Life" said their Omo-white shirts  :o

Not if was a choice between watching that video and stabbing my eardrum with a rusty icepick !  It was just plain nauseating  :o ;D

Huey Lewis & The News "Hip To Be Square"

What's wrong with that one? A little dizzying, I admit, but I thought it was a pretty cool effect. Especially with the close-up of Huey's vocal chords on the chorus, that was pretty funny!

You really want a cheesy video? What about journey's "Seperate Ways"? Steve can sing, the guys can play, but none of them can dance!

Haw haw! You got that right! "Some-day, love will find you, Break-those chains that bind you!," and the guys are standing there, um, bouncing?  What would you call that move?

Huey Lewis (Doin It All For My Baby (Is this video a Frankenstein remake?)  :P)
Cher If I could turn back time (Why is she half naked in this video?)  :o
Men Without Hats The Safety Dance (Is this video a nursery rhyme or something?) :P

Howard, I agree with you on Cher. I certainly didn't need to see tattoos on the bare butt of a 45-year-old(I think) has-been diva.
But Huey's video was supposed to be a Frankenstein parody, intended to be funny, and it was! As for "If This Is It", the beach video was one of the funniest clips of the mid-80's! The idea was he tried to find the girl he was singing to in then song, but he kept catching her fraternizing with every other guy she sees, and she just wouldn't bother breaking up with him, just like the song says. Hope this helps!

Oh, I like the Safety Dance video.  Two few videos feature a medieval pageant theme.

It is a wee bit precious, though, and they could have done without exploiting the little people, though I'm sure they meant no harm.

The Safety Dance is hilarious. It's a bit of a running joke in the household at the moment.

The bad videos for me are the sad black and white style vids that are just plain boring.

'Waiting for a star to fall' - Boy meets Girl
'Oh L'amour' - Dollar
'I just died in your arms tonight' - Cutting Crew

The songs are great however.  :)

Yes. Kiss was the video where Prince just pranced about in a pair of pants. I love the video to 'Physical'. It is so hilariously tacky!  ;D

Make that Art of Noise with Tom Jones.  Blecccch!  I like a lot of trax by the Art of Noise, but not that one.  I mean, there are some singers I like with a sense of cheesy irony, but not Tom Jones, I think he's just gross!

Nothing personal, Koop.

Bon Jovi "Runaway"

Hoo hoo hoo!  I laugh, not because I remember this video, but because it wrenched me to recall Bob Jovi's "She Don't Know" video.  It was Hee-haw-larious!  The best part was a lone Jon struttin' down the street with what appeared to be one mutha of a sock stuffed in his trousers.  If it really wasn't a sock, then he shouldn't have looked so gosh-darn lonely and falorn in the scene at the cafe (bar?) :o!  This song is such a guilty pleasure for me though.

Heh!  Actually, I would've been really surprized if someone had agreed with me on that song. (I've tortured many with it in the past.)  In the cheese department, Jones IMO, has always been limburger...hard to take unless you like really stinky cheese.  Plus, it's funny to me because he takes himself so seriously.  But I've always had a warped sense of humor when it comes to cheese.  ;)  (I actually own the Golden Throats collection.  :D)

I actually like these videos. And "You Might Think" is a classic.

Some bad videos with good songs I saw on the VMA winning videos special:

ZZ Top "Rough Boy"

REM "Orange Crush"

David Bowie & Mick Jagger "Dancing In The Street" (Though the song is slightly cheesy itself)

The worst video for a song I love...
"NeverEnding Story" by Limahl

As for the Bowie/Jagger vid for "Dancing In The Streets," there was a great story behind that one. Anybody that was glued to their TVs for Live Aid will remember this. In less than 24 hours, they recorded the song, made the video, had it edited and ready to premier that afternoon AND got to Wembley in time for their individual performances.  :o IMHO, it was one of the coolest things that happened that day. Almost as cool as Phil Collins playing both stages with a little help from the Concord.
