Catching Up with Depeche Mode - depeche mode
People Are People - depeche mode

Those aren't proper Depeche Mode albums! Catching Up... is a "greatest hits" compilation, and People Are People is a North America-only release capitalising on the success of the single "People Are People" and making the North American public more familiar with Depeche Mode's lesser known songs. The latter has one of my favourite DM songs, "Get The Balance Right!" Sorry...only trying to educate! ;D Depeche Mode are one of my favourite bands!

My nominees for best New Wave albums:

Metamatic - John Foxx
Vienna - Ultravox
Systems Of Romance - Ultravox
The Pleasure Principle - Gary Numan
Speak & Spell - Depeche Mode

I mean Speak & Spell the proper LP; not the CD, no bonus tracks, nothing. I prefer the UK release which has "I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead" instead of "Dreaming Of Me" on it. :)

Yes, I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan...er..."Mode-woman."

Nooooooo...Vince leaving was a good thing!! Martin finally got to show his talents as a songwriter. His songs got deeper and more emotional as time went on. Vince couldn't do that at the time. Yes, Vince could write a good pop song that had a good beat and you could dance to it, but his words meant nothing. Martin was and still is capable of doing both! Vince would eventually get better with Yazoo and Erasure though.

The Synth Wizard...The God of Electropop is the man you see surrounding my posts. No one can beat him. :)

1. Martin was just honing his skills back then and I think trying to be like another Vince. He soon got a lot better!

2. The Human League's Reproduction and Travelogue are great. A question though: Do you even know who I was talking about?

By the way...of course there would be no New Wave or electropop without a little band called KRAFTWERK!

Yes, I suppose Kraftwerk are the real synth-Gods. They started the whole synthpop movement back in 1974! Without them, there'd be no Human League, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, John Foxx (who once was with Ultravox), etc...

They may not be proper albums, but I listened to them incessantly when they came out.  In fact, "People Are People" was the first DM album I ever bought.

Anyway,
I did list my favorite New Wave albums, about 75 of them.  However, my internet connection crashed and wiped out the whole thing before I got a chance to post it.  Arrrrgh!  I'm not going to bother re-typing it!

I believe Catching Up... was the first collection of Depeche Mode songs I ever bought, and I listened to it a lot too...but I would never consider it a Depeche Mode album, because it's not. It's not something they went into the studio and recorded. It's a "greatest hits" album. Sorry, but I'm picky about these things. ;D

Awwwww! I hope you get around to posting your list again, if you can remember them all!

Well, New Wave is a very wide term as it includes subgenres like Synthpop, New Romanticism, Gothic, Postpunk, Indie/Alternative, New Rockabilly, New Ska and Power Pop. Yet it occupied the era between 1978 and 1986, admittedly a very long period. And it is very difficult to say which best albums to come out of it are. But I'll try to go with some in no particular order:

Construction Time Again - Depeche Mode (1983)
Black Celebration - Depeche Mode (1986)
Dare! - The Human League (1981)
Penthouse And Pavement - Heaven 17 (1981)
The Luxury Gap - Heaven 17 (1983)
Non Stop Erotic Cabaret - Soft Cell (1981)
Happy Families - Blancmange (1982)
The Colour Of Spring - Talk Talk (1986)
Vienna - Ultravox (1980)
The Lexicon Of Love - ABAC (1982)
Duran Duran - Duran Duran (1981)
Rio - Duran Duran (1982)
Kaleidoscope - Siouxsie & The Banshees (1980)

Empires And Dance - Simple Minds (1980)
Sons And Fascinations/Sister Feelings Call - Simple Minds (1981)
New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) - Simple Minds (1982)
Seventeen Seconds - The Cure (1980)
Faith - The Cure (1981)
Pornography - The Cure (1982)
In The Flat Field - Bauhaus (1980)
Some Girls Wander By Mistake (Sisters 80-83) - The Sisters Of Mercy (1992)
Entertainment! - Gang Of Four (1979)
Solid Gold - Gang Of Four (1981)
Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division (1979)
Closer - Joy Division (1980)
Power, Corruption & Lies - New Order (1983)
Low Life - New Order (1985)
The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths (1986)
Waiting For A Miracle - Comsat Angels (1980)
Sleep No More - Comsat Angels (1981)
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1980)
Organisation - Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1980)
Architecture & Morality - Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1981)
Dazzle Ships - Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1983)
Parallel Lines - Blondie (1978)
Stray Cats - Stray Cats (1981)
A Date With Elvis - The Cramps (1986)
Computer World - Kraftwerk (1981)

:)

That is a fantastic track, Abercrombie! Early Human League (1977-1980 period) were great! The criminally underrated "Reproduction" (1979) and "Travelogue" (1980) are one of the finest experimental electronic albums ever IMO. Especially the latter. Love it!
