Subject: Great 80's Movies with Lousy Sequels

Written By: hysteric et vous on 09/23/04 at 9:23 pm

Ever notice that the 80's had some really cool movies that someone up there thought, "Let's do it again", I don't think the "capitalize on this" mentality works well in sequels, toys etc. maybe but so many sequels are flops.  I can't even think of a movie other than the current Lord of the Rings trilogy or Star Wars that succeeded in the sequal business.

Here are my picks for terrible sequels:

Sequels that stink  :P : Teen Wolf, Karate Kid(by the third one I was scared to watch it, they turned a fun movie into something frightening), Three Men and a Baby, Back to the Future

That's all I could come up with at the moment.  Anyone else have a different take on my choices or care to add to this list?

yeah, rocky. the movie wins an academy award and stallone had to beat the sequals into the ground.

superman. 2 was good and it all went to hell after that.
batman. 3 and 4 should be stricken from the record
star wars. the original three were the best.
rambo. *insert vomit smilie here*
conan was awesome, conan the destroyer was a waste. arnie was prepared to make conan 3 when someone convinced him to be a politician...boo.

I concur with that as well, which is such a shame b/c the first one was so great.

Ghostbusters 2 was pretty lame, and unbelievably they decided to make a second Mannequin movie.
Also anything past Friday the 13th part 4.

I can't even think of a movie other than the current Lord of the Rings trilogy or Star Wars that succeeded in the sequal business.

I can... Toy Story 2, Star Trek 2, 4, and 6 (something about the even numbers... in any case, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is the only movie in the series I absolutely will not watch); Shrek 2, Spiderman 2, the 2nd Harry Potter movie (haven't seen the third yet) to name some. Course, of these only the Star Trek movies are from the 80s. If you want to look for decent numbers in the sequels though, look to James Bond. Even if you're only a fan of Sean Connery, the Bonds sequels of his age were quite good (fact, Goldmember is often considered one of the best, and that was the third or fourth Bond movie).

Bad Sequels:
Caddyshack 2
Psycho 2, 3, 4 and the mindless, shot-by-shot rehash of the original by Gus Van Sant
Jaws 2, 3, 4
Exorcist 2, 3, The Beginning
The Omen 2, 3, 4
Beverly Hills Cop 2 and 3
Lethal Weapon 3 and 4
Rocky
Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection
Star Wars 1, 2 (The prequels, and I'm not looking forward to Part 3 either)
Cheech and Chong's Next Movie and any C & C movie afterward.
Superman 3 and 4

Rocky 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

There are no Rocky 6, 7, 8. 9, and 10. They only made 5 Rocky movies.

Bad sequels:
Look Who's Talking 2
Rocky 2, 3, 4, 5,
Beverly Hills Cop 2

It's amazing how people's opinion's are differen't huh?
A lot of people hated Look Who's Talking 2, but I personally thought it was so much funnier and realistic than the first one.

Rocky 4 is personally my favorite, although I'll agree that part 5 was lacking in a lot of things.

Beverly Hills Cop 2  is the best of the series!

The Rocky Sequels were great sequels with the exception of maybe 5.

Superman part IV was sorta corny but part III was really good.

I agree whole heartedly on The Batman thing, Michael Keaton is Batman, they shoulda stopped after he wouldn't be batman anymore.

They're never gonna make anymore Rocky sequels.Sylvester Stallone is too old and too busy to make anymore unless they come up with somebody who's young enough to create his Rocky character to perfection.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (the third one was pretty good and of course Raiders of the Lost Ark)
Grease 2
Friday the 13th (number whatever)
Halloween 2-whatever. I mean, how many times do they have to kill Michael Myers? But #3 was by far the worse.
Rocky (number whatever)
Rambo
Revenge of the Nerds 2-whatever. The first one was great, though.

I'm sure there are many more but this is what I could think of off the top of my head.

"Arthur 2" was a total waste, and "Rocky 5" was a big mistake.

Did they really need a sequel to "Coccoon"?

The "Star Trek" sequels bested the original movie from 1979.

"Fierce Creatures" was not a sequel per se to "A Fish Called Wanda," but it was a long-awaited reunion of the "Wanda" cast members.  We "Wanda" fans expected much and received a big disappointment.

"Halloween" and "Jaws" were '70s movies that had needless sequels in the '80s, although "Halloween II" was quite good.

The "Look Who's Talking" movies should never have been made, and whoever came up with the idea should have been blacklisted forever.

They released "2010," in 1984, again not a sequel to an '80s movie, but to "2001," 1968.  That was a flop.

Definitely Caddyshack 2 and the Blues Bros. sequel as well.

They shouldn't have even tried with the classics.

Good 80's movie sequels:
Back To The Future Parts 2 & 3, Indiana Jones(Temple Of Doom, ok. Last Crusade, best of the 3), Star Trek 2-3-4, Karate Kid Part 2, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Lethal Weapon (2, a little too bloody. 3, much funnier!), Terminator 2, Crocodile Dundee 2 & 3.

Lousy Sequels:
Beverly Hills Cop 3, Lethal Weapon 4(gone too far), Look Who's Talking Too & Now, Karate Kid 3 & 4, Die Hard 2 (3rd was better), Terminator 3(what a disappointing end!)

OK Weekend at Bernies 2 is one of the worst movies ever made....ok you can only do so much with a dead guy!!
~BATMAN(ILUV BATMAN) Went to the crapper after the 2nd one
~BAck to the future sequels aren't as bad but the orginal is obviously the best
~NEverending Story (one of my fav. movies as a kid not for sure if it was the 80s??) after the 1st they wher crap
~all of the disney movies ex. Little Mermaid(best ever),Beauty and the beast, Cinderalla- Dinsey needs to hire people who can think of some new stuff
Thats all I can think of right now..but its safe to say that majority of sequels are crap ;)

The first Neverending Story was excellent, the 2nd one with the late Jonathan Brandis was really good, but the third one (was there also a 4th one?) was really PANTS and looked like a poor version of the Power Rangers with a lame storyline.  I had no idea that they made a sequel to Mannequin...

As for Weekend At Bernie's....I hated BOTH ::)

I'm a huge movie nut and I agree with most of the bad movies posted here.  However, I really liked Back to the Future II.  Can't say that for part III.

On The Lost Boys Collector's Edition DVD there is talk about making a sequel.  It will be The Lost Girls.  Will that suck or what?  No pun intended.

No Retreat, No Surrender 2  ::)
Superman III

Actually for the most part, I am a big supporter of sequels and I like the majority of them. Of course, there are a few bad apples in every bunch.

BAD SEQUELS:

Mannequin 2: On the Move (God, that was a bad movie! 'Nuff said ;D)
Halloween III (Why the hell was it made? It didn't have anything to do with Michael Myers!)
Police Academy: Mission to Moscow (I liked all of them up to this movie because in every movie before this one, they at least brought one character from the first 6 movies back but in this one no one came back...which should tell you something ::))
Exorcist II: The Heretic (Another badly made sequel that was not necessary...I personally feel the only reason it was made was to show the world how much Linda Blair had grown up)
Just One of the Girls (God...why was this made? Just One of the Guys didn't need a sequel!)
Friday the 13th: Jason Goes to Hell and Jason 10

GOOD SEQUELS:

Police Academy 2-6
Three Men and a Little Lady (Call me crazy but I thought this movie was cute!)
Back to the Future 2 and 3
Teen Wolf Too
Nightmare on Elm Street 2-7
Fright Night 2
Friday the 13th 2-8 (After the 8th one they should have called it quits but nooo! They had to milk that movie for all it was worth and make Jason Goes to Hell and Jason 10)

Anyways, that's my list of good and bad sequels....there might be more but for now this is all I am listing.

Good sequels

Batman Begins

I don't think you can call Batman Begins a sequel, since they were completely re-creating the Batman franchise with this movie. They had a completely new cast, director, producers, etc.

If you want to call it a sequel, you'd have to call Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie a sequel as well, since there were Batman movies made in the 60s and earlier.
