Definitely the originals! However, some covers are good.

They are:

UB40's cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love"
Aerosmith's cover of "Come Together"
Stevie Wonder's cover of the Beatles' "We Can Work it Out"
Maxie Priest's cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World"
Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me"

However, some covers are just horrendous like, Britney Spears' bad cover of "My Perogative" and Jessica Simpson's "Take My Breath away". My son loves Smashmouth's cover of "I'm A Believer". He's five and a half, so he thought it was an original song until I played The Monkees' version. He liked it still.

Sorry, man. A few of these, neither the original nor the cover was from the eighties. If a topic covers multiple decades, use the Playful Penguin Place. This is the 80s forum.

The following songs in which neither rendition is 80s:
Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley or UB 40
Elvis' version was done in the 60s; UB40's was done in the 90s (namely '93, when Bill Clinton was President)

Words - Bee Gees or Boyzone
Bee Gees: 60s; Boyzone: 90s or 00s

How Deep Is Your Love - Be Gees or Take That
Bee Gees: 70s; Take That: 90s

Tragedy - Bee Gees or Steps
Bee Gees: 70s; Steps: 2000s, I think

Dreams - Fleetwood Mac or The Corrs
Fleetwood Mac: 70s; The Corrs: 90s or 00s

You Really Got Me - The Kinks or Van Halen
Kinks: 60s; Van Halen: 70s ('78, I believe)

I'm A Believer - The Monkees or Neil Diamond or Smash Mouth
Monkees: 60s; Smash Mouth: 00s. I know that Neil Diamond wrote it, but I don't know that he ever performed a rendition of it.

Ordinary World - Duran Duran or Aurora Ft. Naimee Coleman
Duran Duran: 90s; the other one: 00s.

Leaving On A Jet Plane - Janis Joplin or Chantal Kreviazuk
Janis Joplin: 60s or 70s; Chantal Kreviazik: 00s.

Staying Alive - Bee Gees or Ozzy Osbourne & Dweezil Zappa
Bee Gees: 70s; Ozzy Osbourne and Dweezil Zappa: not sure.

Of those that ARE from the 80s:

"Heaven": I would have to go with Bryan Adams. I CAN'T STAND that horrible remake by DJ Sammy et al. I wanna PUKE whenever I hear it. :P

"Boys Of Summer": I have to go with Don Henley; the Ataris should have picked some other song to cover.

Me too. Any time it comes on the radio, I change the station. That version is just AWFUL!

"You Can't Hurry Love" Diana Ross or Phil Collins
"True Colors" Cyndi Lauper or Phil Collins

"Downtown Train" Tom Waits or Rod Stewart, but honestly I like Patty Smyth's version the best, from about 1987 or so.  She also did a version of "Only The Young" by Journey.

I absolutely cant stand most of the remakes I hear these days.  Sweet Child O Mine and Heaven rank as the worst.  And BTW, it sure makes you feel old when some people you talk to have no clue that this piece of garbage song "Heaven" was done by someone else originally and was once a good song.  To me it doesnt feel like it was that long ago.

I always thought English Beat's Tears of a Clown was a good cover, but it didn't make the list.

Also the Clash do a killer cover of Police and Thieves.

Lovesong:

The Cure vs. 311

The victory would go to Robert Smith and Mary Poole (Rob's Wife) because Nick from 311 damaged Mary's wedding present, in both the versions:

Cure's version: Wedding Bliss
311's version: Wedding Disaster!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:

One cover that is really done well is a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street"... a group called Black Uhuru did a reggae version of it that is fantastic and has some great harmonization of voices.

A few of them I havent heard or dont remember but all the ones I did,I pick the originals!!

I dont like it when people steal other peoples songs...... It just shows they have nothing of thier to offer and they usually make the song crap compared to what it was.....

Like AEROSMITH singing COME TOGETHER .. What a piece of trash!!!! -- The beatles version is 100000% better!!

"Cat's In The Cradle" Harry Chapin or Ugly Kid Joe?
"You Might Think" The Cars or Weezer?

The 1986 song Kiss by Prince is a song that I do not like at all.  It is in fact my least favourite song ever, however when The Art of Noise and Tom Jones covered it in 1988, it was one of the best things ever!

Stand Back - Stevie Nicks or Linus Loves and Sam Obernik?

You're probably thinking, who are the latter two?  Linus Loves is a Scottish DJ and Sam Obernik is an English singer and their 2003 version of Stand Back is quite possibly my favourite cover song of all time!  I love the Stevie Nicks version, but the cover gets a slight edge just for the fantastic music video!

I prefer the originals better with the cover versions, the music sounds a bit different.
