Subject: Anyone remember Afterschool Specials?

Written By: eightieschick53 on 01/10/05 at 8:30 pm

Come on, I know everyone remembers :). It was those little movies that would come on as you were coming home from school. There was always a message or some kind of deep meaning behind them, such as telling teens not to take drugs or something along those lines.  ;)

they were THE BEST...especially since we got to eat supper in the rec room while watching them..good times  8)

the ones that stand out for me the most are where do babies come from,my parents are getting divorced and the one about the Punch And Judy puppet show on a boardwalk  :)

Yup, they would come on at about 4 pm! I remember the one about the teens having a baby and how hard it was for them.

Loved them...I wish they would come out with a DVD compilation.

I remember the one about cocaine and had a young Helen Hunt jumping out a window.

Looks like they were mostly produced in the 70's, though that may be just what was released. Here's some interesting info on it too...

I don't think all of them were, I particularly remember a funny one called Wanted: The Perfect Guy. The story was this teenage boy(played by a very young Ben Affleck) and his best friend(girlfriend?) search the city to find a date for his Mom.
If anyone else remembers this one, does anyone remember who played the girl? Is she still acting today? Thanks In Advance.

For those that grew up in New York during the 70s and 80s, the Afterschool Special would preempt the daily 4:30 Movie.

The ABC After School Special was on every couple of weeks unless the station was having one of its "theme" weeks.

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0206404/ here is the IMDb link. Was the character named Melanie? If so, the person who played her hasn't done anything since 1988 doing some guest shots on the Cosby Show it looks like.

There was one called "The Wave" which was based on a true story about a history teacher teaching his class about the rise of Nazism in Germany. VERY POWERFUL!!!! I managed to get a copy of this one. (Bought a bootleg copy on e-bay). There is only one place that sells it legitamatly and they want something like $80 for a VHS.  :o :o :o  If you EVER get a chance to see it, I recommend it highly.

Of COURSE I remember the ABC Afterschool Specials.  I looked excitedly forward to watching them everyday, when I got home from school. Even during high school.  The interest never wore off.  Of course I cannot recall most of the episode's that aired, because they are long gone today, but there were so many great ones.  Mainly they were depictions of adolescent life, portraying the 1970's, then moving into the big 80's.  In fact, those old after school specials were where some of our old fave TV and film actors got their first starts --- like Michael J. Fox, Nancy McKeon, Philip McKeon (her brother), Willie Ames, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Scott Baio, John Stamos (yes, even prior to General Hospital), Kirk Cameron, Tom Howell, Patrick Swayze ---- just to name a few.

I always remember this one:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0286988/

"Stoned"

Starring Scott Baio.  Classic.  It was about the dangers of pot.  Remember the first time the stoner kid turns "Jack" onto the stuff, he's starring out the window saying, "Look at that tree, man, I never noticed all those knots and grooves in the bark before!"
"Yeah, that's what grass does for ya man!"
Then he's stuffing his face with corn flakes!
:D

We laughed and laughed because they pronounced it "mary-wanna."

"Stoned" was not only an ABC After School Special, but they also canned it for general education purposes, so I remember seeing it again in school in 1983.  I say "canned" because that was just prior to universal VCRs.  Thus you got an actual celluloid film in a metal cannister and watched with a projector.

Who remembers that?  Who remembers like campy, low-budget science films in the school auditorium?

They do- sort of-  its called the N.  This cable channel is dedicated to very young children during the day but in the afternoon they have great shows for teens all with a little aftershool special flavor.  Degrassi and South of Nowhere are shows about teens dealing with life issues that teens face.  Drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy, religion, sexuality.  Its great stuff.

Oh, I'm sure somebody has it.  You can find that person somewhere on the Internet.  If you looked long enough, you could find somebody who has every Family Feud episode from 1977--recorded consecutively AND transferred to DVD!

"Horrible Honchos" might be deemed racially insensitive nowadays, especially since there was a Latino kid involved.  I did not know that Kim Richards was Paris Hilton's aunt.
