Who likes Short Circuit?
I think it's one of the best movies of the 1980s.

I like Newton Crosby, Number Five's creator, played by Steve Guttenberg. I still think he's cute.
Short Circuit is one of my FAVORITE movies.

I'm thinking about getting it on DVD this weekend. I have it on VHS, but it's not letterboxed and I like letterbox now.

I liked the theme song to this movie, "Who's Johnny?".  I think it was sung by that guy from El Debarge or something like that.

Maybe it was Kool & the Gang (I liked Who's Johnny too)!

ooops - I stand corrected, the 2 groups sound similar, don't they Howard?

That was a cute movie. I always thought Ben (Fisher Stevens) was so funny.

Newton Crosby: Where are you from, anyway?
Ben Jabituya: Bakersfield, originally.
Newton Crosby: No, I mean your ancestors.
Ben Jabituya: Oh, them. Pittsburgh.

I have Newton Crosby to blame for the interest in computers that I have today. I first saw this movie in 1995 and fell in love with that character (and Steve Guttenberg).
My favorite line is "It's a machine, it doesn't get scared, it doesn't get happy, It doesn't get sad,  It doesn't laugh at your jokes, it JUST RUNS PROGRAMS!".
The other one is the banter between Howard Marner and Newton Crosby about Number 5 trangulating its position :)

The Indian guy was hilarious with his language slip-ups.  Was this the end of Alley Sheedy's short run of films?

I liked that character too, especially the way he called Ally Sheedy "girlie" all the time. I don't think there'll be too many characters like this in the future, he's a definite racial stereotype; the PC brigade would have a field day with this today, even though it seems pretty harmless to me.

I like the 2nd also but I think the first is much better.........

I like the first so much I wanted to get a good VHS copy and not one that looked bad! (That movie was DIGITALLY RE-RECORDED and sadly thats whats on most of the tapes) -- I finally got one that has the original video on it.. (Same as you saw when you watched it on analogue cable in the 80s)

I love this movie! -- I would love getting a hold of Newton Howard!!!

It’s quite obvious that fans of the show, Wake, Rattle, and Roll, have Johnny 5 to thank for DECKS.

I prefer the first movie to the second one, but Short Circuit 2 was somewhat as funny as the first one.

There were. That's why Number 5 is No. 5 and not No.1. ;)
There were other similar robots (all with a different number of course) which were not per se evil but did what they were programed to do.

I believe so. If my memory serves right the robots were demonstrated to a military audience. You can also see that they all have different numbers, so it's not just a line up of backup robots for the movie studio that somebody photographed behind the scenes during shooting but they were actually meant to be seen in one shot together.

Short Shortcut is my favorite 80's movie.

I actually just watched Short Circuit I for the first time last year - excellent movie! Even though I'm an '80's kid, I missed this when it was first released for whatever reason, and never caught it in later years - until now.

The storyline was interesting & clever, with solid performances from all the cast. The idea that a gentle scientist/technician would be working for the military industrial complex to build weapons that are intended for war is not a new concept in films at all, but was handled extremely well here.

The film did remind me that when I was growing up in the '80's, some people (especially those in the manufacturing industry) were worried that robots were going to take over their jobs. 30+ years later, this has happened to some extent - but, I still don't see automated bartenders or baristas - as is seen in the film (re: the early scene when the robots were making drinks & serving coffee, etc.) - LOL.

Number 5 was the ultimate couch potato - since he didn't need to sleep, he could stay up all watching TV & channel surfing, and then later endlessly quote the phrases/sayings/commercials that he had seen on the boob tube ;)

My favorite parts of the film include:

- When Guttenberg was talking to the military/corporate big shots, and stated that he had initially designed the robot(s) as a "marital aid", much to their disgust - hilarious ;)

- The sequence when Number 5 quickly & completely dismantled (but not destroyed) the Trans-Am, belonging to Ally Sheedy's obnoxious ex-bf  ;)

- The scene when Number 5 burst into the bathroom when AS was taking a bath, and said, "Very attractive...nice software!" - LOL

- When Number 5 re-programmed his adversary robots to act like the Three Stooges - very funny.
