I voted for Rush off your list, I was big into them and Max Webster in the early 80s(has anyone outside of Canada heard of Max Webster ?) The Tragically Hip needs mention, not thought of as an 80's band their album from 89 'Up To Here' is excellent.  :)

Of Course it´s Rush and another Rush, namely Mahogany Rush with Frank Marino coming second. Rush´s saga still continues. so I guess Saga comes then.

I like all the artists on your list, especially Rush and Loverboy. But I still had to go with other. My favorite Canadian band would have to be TRIUMPH. Loads of great songs and an incredible live show. TRIUMPH ruled the eighties in Canada!

Alright!! Another Kings and 'This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide' fan. And I know there are many others out there.
It's one of my favs from the '80s. It didn't get any airplay where I live when it was first released but finally did two years later.

Other '80s Canadian artists favorites...

Limelight - Rush
Working for the Weekend - Loverboy
Living Inside Myself - Gino Vannelli

I hope I didn't miss any good ones from Canada for that decade.

Parachute Club. I remember them. "Rise Up" comes to mind off that 1983 album. I may still have that cassette.
And Sarah McLachlan, I always thought of her as '90s only. Guess not.

And someone else also mentioned Chilliwack. I too, remember that "I Believe" song from 1982.

Does anybody have any MP3s of Tu, the twin sisters from Toronto who put a couple of albums out in the late 80s?  All I've heard so far is some samples from this page: http://www.musicbymailcanada.com/Tu/index2.html

I'd never heard of this group in my life until I heard "Stay With Me" at the barbor shop last time I got a haircut and the song stuck in my head.  I succeeded in finding out who did it, but, alas, I haven't had any luck finding their albums or songs anywhere.

i voted  "other' because of a canadian group  named  Doug And The Slugs!!! i have seen two dozen times!  over 20 trips into canada to see this band! they put on a great show for over 25 years until doug passed away a few years back, check out their webpage,    http://www.dougandtheslugs.com/
and they have a few videos on youtube as well!  they hve won many canadian artist grammys, just an over all great sounding fun group. :)

^  I personally do not know Doug And The Slugs.

Rush is my favorite Canadian band because IMO they have so many good albums and songs.  I like Bryan Adams as well but only a handful of songs outside of the Reckless album.

For a different synth sound, my favorite is Images In Vogue.  I like Lust For Love, Call It Love, Save It, and Travel.

Subject: Re: Favorite Canadian Band/Artist of the 80's

Doug and the Slugs had ZERO success outside of Canada, but they had some exposure in the States:  Their last ever Top 40 hit in Canada 'Tomcat Prowl' was recorded for the movie IRON EAGLE II.  In the late 90s, their 1980 hit 'Too Bad' served as the theme song for Norm MacDonald's sitcom 'The Norm Show'

i dont know why they didnt do well in the states, the first two shows i saw from them were in portland oregon and they were packed!  i was hooked from then on!  about 1985, they also opened up for the "huey lewis and the news" sports tour!

I like a couple of songs from certain bands/artists (Heaven in Your Eyes - Loverboy, Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart, Just One Night - Triumph, Promises - Frozen Ghost, New Girl Now - Honeymoon Suite, If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot) . . .

I think the two Canadian artists I love to listen to is Bruce Cockburn and Luba. Listening to Pacing the Cage by Cockburn is, for me, almost a cathartic experience. As for Luba, she has an amazing voice and I recommend songs like Everytime I See Your Picture I Cry, No More Words, The Best is Yet to Come, Strength in Numbers, How Many and Giving Away A Miracle.

Ok guys, I need your help!  I have been wracking my brain for weeks to try to think of the name of this song and band.  It's a group from the 80's, i believe they are from Quebec.  They had one top ten song.  The song was about a murder.  I tell you i have looked everywhere on line to try to find the name of the song.  The chorus goes something like, "oh say, say to me, please say that this can't be"  Sorry I don't have more than that....it's driving me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Closer Together"

"Dancing on The grave"

The Box were tops of their day!..A lot of great bands come out of Quebec.

If you play or played guitar or drums, I think you would have a different opinion, perhaps.  They are completely original in their lyrics and sound.  That is why commercially, they were never a powerhouse like Zeppelin or Aerosmith.  However, they have a devoted fan base, that has stuck with them for 32 years now - that's pretty substantial.  Neal Peart, though VERY quirky, is one of the top drummers ever.  He's also a very good story-teller, as he has written almost all of the lyrics.  Sure, some are spaced-out, but others are a social commentary, like the lyrics from Natural Science.

I've seen them 12 or so times since 1981.  I'm amazed they can still ramp-up and play nearly as good as they did 20+ years ago.  They are WAY better than the Rolling Stones, who I will give credit to, as being the oldest band alive.  To each his own, but you are missing out on some terrific talent!  Cheers. :)

Jane Siberry was cool.  She was often called Canada's Laurie Anderson.  There is some stylistic similarity, but Siberry tends to be fluffier than Anderson.  Anderson has a dark, ironic side in all her works.

Like Anderson, Siberry is still around and when she puts out an album, it's always high quality stuff!

Unlike Anderson, Jane Sibbery never had 7 minute weird songs about a Canadian superhero :D

Jane did have many a  great album.  Her 1986 song 'One More Colour' is probably still her most well known song.  still frequently played on classic stations.

Amen to that.

Laurie Anderson started out as a sculptor and moved into electronic music and performance art in the 1970s.
