Subject: Favorite solo career

Written By: Tanya1976 on 02/06/05 at 2:12 pm

I was listening to George Michael just now and I was amazed at his songwriting and performing after he left Wham. I was thinking about how many other artists who became even better after leaving a band, group, or duo. It was quite a number that reached greater success.

So, who is your favorite solo artist(s) after leaving a band, group, or duo.

BTW, here are some of mine: Michael Jackson, Prince, Tina Turner, Phil Collins, and Belinda Carlisle.

I can't believe you left out Sting.

Oh, I selected George Michael & Michael Jackson  :)

Not intentionally, Woops!  :) I like when others add their input. I wasn't sure of my poll options limit.

Add as you please. I like that!

Of course, I love Sting!!

Peter Gabriel is #1 for me off your list, an other would be Robert plants stuff in the 80's, it was ok for me not great. I like Phil Collins work with Genesis up to around 1980, not much of his solo stuff , he is an amazing drummer though :)

I'd have to go with Michael Jackson. He had some of the biggest and best hits of all time.

I picked Peter Gabriel, and I'll pick two others:

Morrissey (though some of his solo work can be a bit dodgy, a lot of it is still excellent), and John Foxx. (OK he left Ultravox(!) in 1979, but his first solo album came out in 1980.) ;)

Phil Collins is easily my favorite off the list - grew up listening to so much of his stuff. I couldn't think of a better example of happy pop/rock if I tried!

Interesting trivia that I read somewhere: he was on the charts every year -- whether by one of his own songs, or something from Genesis -- from (I think) 1981 to 1994. 8)

A few more to add. Some of these artists were older, but their solo careers were all in the 80's:

-Paul McCartney (had to put a Beatle on here!)
-Sammy Hagar (Van Halen aside, he had some great pop/metal solo songs)
-Sting
-Lionel Richie
-Peter Cetera
-John Fogerty (his Eye of the Zombie album is so underrated!)
-Don Henley
-Glenn Frey
-Lindsey Buckingham (overall he's uneven, but "Trouble" has gotta be one of the best forgotten 80s songs)
-Steve Perry

I would pick Jon Bon Jovi, even though he didn't have his first solo hit until 'Blaze of Glory' in 1990.  8)
