Subject: Who here was a teen in the 80s?

Written By: Full_House_Fan on 03/03/05 at 5:50 pm

I wasn't.  I was born on the verge of the decade so I wasn't around at all really.  But I know quite a bit about the decade, esp the music.

I turned 13 in 1987, so I got to be both a kid and a teenager in the 80's. So, I'm pretty well schooled in both cultures, particularly the mid-to-late 80's.

I was over 21 then but still had approximately 80 percent of the mind of a teen ::)

You wake up late for school, man, you don't wanna go
You ask your mom, "Please?", but she still says, "No!"
You missed two classes and no homework
But your teacher preaches class like you're some kind of jerk

I was!  I feel lucky to have my early childhood in the 70's (so I'm old enough to remember some of that decade), and then a teenager in the 80's when music and clothes were the coolest!  :)

I was born in 1964, so I became a teenager in the late 70's, graduated HS in '82 at 17, and then college/young adulthood in the mid to late 80's. Boy, those were the days. :)

The ideal 80s teenager was born around the years of 1968-1971.  Someone who was still in high school during the mid 1980s.

Though someone born as early as 1962 or 1963 could claim to be an 80s teenager, and those born as late as 1975, 1976 were also pre-teens/young teenagers in the late 80s, as well as many people born in the late 70s being pre-teens in the late 80s.

I want to add though that I think that someone should have logged in at least 3 years of high school and/or under 18 life to be considered "an 80s teenager".  You should have had some decent amount of time being a kid in the decade to have an honest feel for it.  So that cutoff with the oldest 80s teens should start with people born in 1965, and no earlier.  Sorry to those born during 1962 to 1964.  If you were born in 1964 you are kinda close, graduating high school in 1982 and all, but no cigar.

Unfortunately, I didn't become a teen till the end of '94 -- even then, I kinda wished it was '84 (although, I didn't dislike 1994 per se - wasn't until the late 90's that I started to actually dislike some -- though not all -- things about modern culture).

Well, you were 15 in 1980, so I'd say so! In fact, you were a teen in the coolest part of the 80's imho.

(Strangely, even though I only remember about 1987 and up with real clarity, my favorite part of the 80's has always been the early part. I like 1982 much more than, say 1989 -- maybe 'cause it wasn't 90s-ish at all.)

Anyway, to be technical, 13-19 are the "teen" years, so someone who was 19 in 1980 means that being born as far back as 1961 would qualify. Same for being as young as 13 in 1989 (b. 1976).

This puts the heart of an 80's teen born in mid-1968 -- just like Marty McFly (well not me, I mean the "real" Marty, LOL). :)

I'd happily trade birthdates with you, LOL!

Seriously though, wouldn't you be more a child of the 70's? (Age 0-8). In the 80's, you were 8-18, so, actually yeah, I guess that's half & half of childhood/teenage years.

You could even scrape by as a 90's teen (it was already 1992 before you'd be 20).

I know I'm tecnhical with everything!  :D

Yeah 1989, while still very eighties imo, did begin to have the flannel and dance music so common around 1991 -93.  1961-1976! Wow!  I think the eighties call out most to those born in the late 60s and early 70s.

Some of the 90's "grunge flannel" was just the normal "U Dub" (University of Washington) college kid garb in even the mid 80's.  Basically it actually started as a practical thing, Seattle, although it does have mild winters as far as snow goes for being far north can still get quite cold in the winter...might be just above freezing, but be very damp, Seattle rains a lot.  Anyway, the idea was that someone could tie a flannel shirt around their waist, when it was cold and rainy in the fall or winter, put the shirt on, when one got indoors or if it actually warmed up for a tiny bit, pull the shirt off and tie it around one's waist.  Okay, this might be obvious, but you'd be amazed at how many people I say this to, and actually never thought it was something regional to Seattle and practical first.  ;)  But anyway, U-District of Seattle was kind of grunge before grunge was out there in a way...I didn't go there a lot, but I did once in a while in the mid 80's when I lived there, that's where I graduated high school.
