Subject: Weird Songs of the 80s

Written By: juruby on 04/13/05 at 4:27 pm

I don't know... but it's something about the 80s that inspired some of the weirdest but cathchiest tunes ever.  In your opinion, what is one of those weird "only in the 80s" songs that you have heard?

I'm not sure if you mean weird as in strange/unusual musical melody/arrangement, or strange lyrics but most of the songs by Bow Wow Wow cover all of the above.
"Do You Wanna Hold Me?", "Jungle Boy",  "Wild In The Country":
"Go wild in the country
Where snake-skin bras are absolutely free!"

And especially "Louis Quatorze":
"And I love the way he say so seriously,
With his gun in my back,
Darling, make love to me!"

Different! :o

How 'bout "Don't Worry be Happy"?  :D

It seems strange that an acapella could be a #1 hit, but regardless, I guess it still had that catchiness that could only come out of the 80's. Strangely, it also seems to be one of those songs that you never hear at all anymore outside of the "80's" programs on some radio stations.

Maybe 'cause everyone is still sick of it from 1988/89? I remember when it was on the radio every 2 seconds - combine that with the fact that my dad always loved the song and played it constantly, and I probably heard it 1000 times within the space of 2 years!!

How about "Pass The Dutchie,"?

And even though Kraftwerk was mostly in the 70's, they inspired a lot of 80's groups, so I'm sure there were a lot of songs that were funny-sounding and more for computer nerds.  Take Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science," for example.  It's a good song, but quite nerdy.

Yes, you are right... Falco originally sang it (mostly in German). ATF's cover was done in English. ;)

Another weird song as in bizahr, probably unheard of outside Australia: Uncanny X-Men, "Kill The Children". Sounds like a bunch of stoned musos mucking about in the studio -having polished a few cones and coughed their guts out. ::) ;D

I always thought "The Curly Shuffle" was a weird song.  In America, it was a Top 40 hit by the Jump 'n the Saddle Band.  In Canada, it was a Top 40 hit by The Knuckleheads.  Both versions are pretty much the same, but the Jump 'n the Saddle version has a better musical ending

Some great suggestions here, particularly earlier on in the thread!

Disagree over Falco though, I personally don't see anything 'weird' about his stuff - just European Progressive Rock with a touch of excessive 80's pomp thrown in for good measure.

Here's a few corkers from the darkest corners of my collection:

'Keep Your Eye On Me' - Herb Alpert
'Close To The Edge' - Art Of Noise
'Kool In The Kaftan' - BA Robertson
'Je suis un rock star' - Bill Wyman
'Wot' - Captain Sensible
'Busy Doing Nothing' - Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin
'War' - Culture Club
'We Take Mystery To Bed' - Gary Numan
'Being Boiled' - Human League
'O Superman' - Laurie Anderson
'French Kiss' - Lil Louis
'Double Dutch' - Malcolm McLaren
'Telegraph' - OMD
'Wood Beez' - Scritti Politti

Whoa. "TOAST" by Streetband? I, too, like toast, but I'll see your "Toast", and rasie you "Working on the Radio", by CFNY 102.1 Streetband, 1979, which was the inspiration for Rush's Spirit of Radio.

"O RLY?", I hear you ask.

"YA RLY", I say.  102.1 CFNY had the slogan "Spirit of Radio" before the Rush song.

And the CFNY track "Working on the Radiio" includes a line about the "punk girls' t*bleep*ts" that even Geddy Lee coudn't have gotten past mass-market CanCon radio in the early '80s.

Props to both of them.  "Working on the Radio" is available by MP3 by anyone sufficiently in tune with the Google.

Nitpick:  Debbie Gibson is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child - Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper

(Mojo and Skid went their separate ways after that album, and if you liked their brand of wackiness, you owe it to yourself to check out anything and everything they did.  Mojo Nixon is a god among men.  You haven't lived until you've been in a convertible on a winding country road with his cover of This Land Is Your Land blaring at top volume... nor have you lived until you've been driving home with the top up in the pouring rain, hearing Where The Hell Is My Money...)

80s rap/dance had some weird songs

Cameo - Word Up (I love this song, but it is definitely weird) This song is interesting because it was so popular even though it was weird.
Men Without Hats - Safety Dance (I used to love this song as a kid, still enjoy it, but it is weird and the lyrics are funny)
Newcleus - Jam On It (another big hit, but weird as well)
Maars - Pump Up The Volume
Paul Hardcastle - Nineteen (okay, it has a message, but it is kinda gloomy and weird)
Kraftwork - Numbers (considered genius by many, but extremely weird)
Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love (what are you gonna do when you get out of jail. hmmmmm. weird song)
Orange Juice - Rip It Up (not a big hit like these above, but weird)

It's basically an electronic minimalist piece that happened to get popular.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Superman

The Wiki article is OK.  I'd like to confirm that Anderson anachronistically claims the song refers to the Iran-Contra affair.  Laurie's pretty sharp.  I doubt she's confused like that.

To his credit, Dr. Demento pushed the song on his show, though it never got the kind of popularity it had in the UK.

If you do like "O Superman," check out works by Philip Glass, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich.

Nothing weird about the Sex Pistols, it was just the way they were.

BTW, Silly Thing/Who Killed Bambi by the Sex Pistols And Ten Pole Tudor was first released in April 1979.

(( snipped huge list ))

Anyone who remembers the Forgotten Rebels and the Hawaiian Pups (and especially someone who can put them into the same playlist!) is welcome here!

My entry, although it's technically 1990, would be 2nu's "This is Ponderous".

On the worldbeat/jazz fronts, anyone remember More Kante's "Ye Ke Ye Ke" (aka "Yeke Yeke", depending on how you spell it, and I'm not gonna pay attention to typing in the accents), or Hugh Marsh's "Rules Were Made to be Broken" (from the 1987 album "Shakin' the Pumpkin", which is probably the closest thing to an "explanation" of jazz that's ever been recorded?)

Unless The Dead Milkmen Ever did a "cover"of it?

That may have come from a peer-to-peer download as a lot of them are misslabeled!

Note to FooBar Thanks CFNY used to play the Pups & Forgotten Rebels tracks usually late at night & the more risque tracks in the night time , But they gave them airplay...When police violence erupted in Toronto (52 division had the bad rep for that!).The Pukka Orchestra did a song "Cherry Beach Express"
It was so controversial that the police called the station & asked them not to air it!
David Marsden (program director) Didn't pull the song & the station played it all the more!
From what I understand the police began to wear "T" shirts under their uniforms saying "your riding on the cherry beach express"
Not many rebels left anymore!

Good one.  And speaking of the DM, Taking Retards to the Zoo...

Da Da Da (I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me, Aha Aha Aha) by Trio was weird...

She Binded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby was weird (I thought so at the time, anyhow)...

A couple of songs in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, like Oh Yeah by Yello,  March of the Swivelheads by The English Beat...

Paranoimia (with Max Headroom) by The Art of Noise was weird...

Some of these are probably mentioned on previous pages, but I'm just lazy...

Granted, it's more 70's than 80's, but Viva Las Vegas, done by The Dead Kennedys, is just plain weird!

Da Da Da (I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me, Aha Aha Aha) by Trio was weird...

I always thought that one was weird as well, but it's weirdness was what made it so popular.  What's weird is that Da Da Da was a hit pretty much everywhere but the USA.  It was a #3 hit in the UK, a #2 hit in Canada, and a chart topper in their native Germany

Da Da Da (I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me, Aha Aha Aha) by Trio was weird...

The thing with Trio was they probably were the average German band of it's time, minimalist in it's approach, but because we don't seem to get a huge German influence on our charts we see them as a novelty or weird.

She Binded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby was weird (I thought so at the time, anyhow)...

Thomas Dolby was definitely different, lol. 'Hyperactive' is another great track - with a great video to match.

A couple of songs in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, like Oh Yeah by Yello,  March of the Swivelheads by The English Beat...

I think 'Oh yeah' by Yello was just a production experiment, good for what it was but nothing to it. I don't know 'March of the Swivelheads' - I'll have to check that out.  :)

Paranoimia (with Max Headroom) by The Art of Noise was weird...

When I first heard this song I was a little perturbed by it. Well done to 'Art of Noise' for creating such an unsettling atmosphere.  8)
