Subject: Stinker year of the 80s (not counting 1989, I know that would win)

Written By: DevoRule on 04/19/05 at 9:40 pm

From what I know I'd say 1981.  1980 seemed like a good year and 1982 really brought on the 80s, but 1981 just seemed like it SUCKED!  With all the 70s music on the airwaves and Reagan and the Pope getting shot it just sounded crappy.

1988 only because George W. Bush was elected president! HA!

I would say somewhere around 86. Music started to change, I entered high school. I guess it wasn't as fun as the earlier 80's.

It wasn't much better before with Regan. The 80's weren't great for presidents IMO.

Why do you think 1989 would win?  What was wrong with that year?  I personally loved it.

I'm guessing maybe because it's the end of the decade...?

Simply because it's close to the 90s and this board has a lukewarm feeling on that decade.  Although honestly I see more 90s in 1988 than in 1989.

Old post, but I forgot to respond the first time around. I actually agree -- '88 was a big rap and R&B-ish year, and there seemed to be alot more of an "urban" feel about the culture, especially on TV.

'89 seemed to regress a very little bit - New Kids and the first wave of teen pop, as well as power ballads, were more the rage again. I'd actually consider '89 as a more logical follow-on to 1987 then to 1988! Did somebody have a DeLorean and switch the events around on us? ;D

Seriously though, I would pick probably '88 as well - not because I don't like it (I was 6 so I have good memories of it by then - much clearer than, say '84) but because the "main" 80's was basically over by then. 1988 to 1991 was more early 90's-like.

of the 80's ..basically the further it got, the worse it got ....starting from 86'  ;D

i voted  for 1988 as the cra*piest year of the options !

as for 81' ....i reckon it was one of the best !!!  ( i can't believe there's actually votes for it ! ..what the  :-\\ ) ...thats very un "true 80's fan"  like behaviour !  ::)

That would be George H  W Bush Sr.

I would say 1986 for personal reason's. The early '80s (right after Carter) weren't much better either. The '80s started picking up steam around 1982 or so (after Reagonimics started kicking in, but would prefer to lay off of the politcal debates for the moment and just have fun)..

Actually, it was Gearge Herbert Walker Bush, not George W. Bush. Nonetheless, that did make 1988 SUCK!

Politically, I think the entire decade sucked, with Reagan, Bush, Thacther, and that ilk. I prefer to focus on the pop culture and leave politics out of it.

Peace

1980: More of a holdover of the '70's, which I didn't care for (Mainly Disco  :P  >:( )
