Subject: What is your favorite song of the 80s (1980-89)

Written By: DevoRule on 04/21/05 at 6:51 pm

I'd say "Take on Me" - a-ha.  Then "Brass Monkey" - Beastie Boys and Freedom of Choice - Devo.

Brass Monkey?  Ick.  (Sorry, I can't STAND The Beastie Boys)

Anyways, that's a tough question.  Actually, it's an impossible question!  I could give you ten, but I couldn't narrow to just one.

Woman - John Lennon
Oh L'Amour - Erasure
Major Tom - Peter Schilling
Africa - Toto
Don't You Want Me - Human League
Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil
I Love Rock & Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Dreaming - OMD
Fade To Black - Metallica
Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead

Most women find "Brass Monkey" to be that way  ;D

But yeah, most of the songs you listed are good.  "Whip It" is a great song too but I overrated it at first.

Well, if I listed them all, this site would probably crash! ;D So here's a random 15 "longtime" favorites from the 80's (all different artists):

All Night Long - Lionel Richie
If This is it - Huey Lewis
Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol
Wrapped Around your Finger - Police
Africa - Toto
Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
We Built this City - Starship (*avoids heavy objects thrown my way!*) :D
Urgent - Foreigner
Some Guys have All the Luck - Rod Stewart
Refugee - Tom Petty
Self Control - Laura Branigan
Take on Me - A-ha
I can Dream About You - Dan Hartman
Photograph - Def Leppard
Private Eyes - Hall & Oates

Like I said, this is just from the top of my head. I could probably do 500 before I have to stop and think!!

Good list, not too much hair metal (I hate that stuff although I respect people's taste).

So I take it you're into the rock and roll type 80s most? I like some of that stuff too :)

Yeah, I grew up on pop/rock from then mostly, but I like a bit of everything. I can completely see why people laugh at hair metal, although I like a few songs in the genre.

The better bands of that style are the more versatile "original" ones, like Bon Jovi (my first exposure to hard rock/metal of any kind) and Def Leppard. There's a difference between them and, say Winger/Cinderella. ;D

If I had to give 15 favorites from the '80s I'd go with these. For an all time favorite, as of April 24, 2005, and since Spring is in the air I'll go with Anita Baker and "Same Ole Love".

Steppin' Out -- Joe Jackson
Rock With You -- Michael Jackson
Very Special -- Debra & Ronnie Laws
Cherish -- Madonna
Same Ole Love -- Anita Baker
If You Were Here Tonight -- Alexander O'Neal
Limelight -- Rush
A Night to Remember -- Shalamar
Lost Without You -- BeBe & CeCe Winans
Overjoyed -- Stevie Wonder
Ah! Leah! -- Donnie Iris
This Beat Goes On+Switchin' to Glide -- The Kings
Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now -- McFadden and Whitheead
Our House -- Madness
Train in Vain -- The Clash

(actually numbers 16-20 aren't too bad either  ;) )

Bon Jovi and Def Leppard are both good :) Although I see them more in the Styx/Loverboy camp than the Motley Crue groupies.

True, they're more "80's pop/hard rock" with a 'hair metal' look. Winger, etc. pretty much just copied that look.

But yeah, bands like Journey, Heart, Loverboy and Pat Benatar I'd consider 'Arena rock' - kind of halfway inbetween "pop-rock" and "hard rock". Bon Jovi would be at the heavier end of that.

Oingo Boingo -- Slave
John Parr -- St. Elmo's Fire
Arcadia -- The Flame
OMD -- We Love You
Naked Eye -- Always Something There to Remind Me
Peter Schilling -- The Different Story
Erasure -- Drama
Kon Kan -- Move to Move
Depeche Mode -- Somebody (live version)
Elephante -- Young and Innocent
Huey Lewis and the News -- Power of Love
Band Aid -- Do They Know It's Christmas
and some others I can't think of atm...

That's what I'd listen to anyway.

If I had to pick ONE and only ONE as a favorite '80s, specifically '80s song, for all the '80s represent, for the '80s being the '80s, for me being who I was in the '80s, I just can't get past the notion that it must be:

A Flock of Seagulls: Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)

Please read the title to this post again. It does clearly state 1980 to 1989. NOT songs from the 1990's. After all this is the 80's board if you haven't forgotten.

"Cry Wolf" is a good song. It was very melancholic though, which is probably why it didn't get much airplay. :)

A-HA's Cry Wolf Lyrics: (From Scoundrel Days - 1986)

Night I left the city
I dreamt of a wolf.
He came from where the winds are cold
and truth is seen through keenholes.
Strange longings that will never sleep

now he's come where no heart beats.

Cry wolf
time to worry
cry wolf
time to worry now.

You can start but you cannot stop
you give in but you can't give up

you can tell all your desperate jokes to a world that puts your
love on hold.

Cry wolf
time to worry
cry wolf
time to worry now.
Cry wolf
time to worry
cry wolf
time to worry now.

The sunken - in eyes and the pain in his cries

a shape in the dark .

Cry wolf
time to worry
cry wolf
time to worry now.
Cry wolf
time to worry now.
Cry wolf
time to worry now.
Cry wolf
time to worry
cry wolf
time to worry now.
Cry wolf
time to worry now
cry wolf
time to worry now.

Of course that might change in a week or so.

I found that Barnes and Noble.com has the CD where you can also hear 30sec samples. This is the CD I own. I remember my sister getting this album on a TAPE for Christmas in 1986. Cry Wolf was never played on the radio back in '86 and early '87.
