Subject: Best Songs of 1989

Written By: iluvthe80s on 05/19/05 at 7:49 am

I chose 1989 for this thread since that's the year I turned 18 and graduated from high school.  These are some of my fave songs from that year:

Dr Feelgood - Motley Crue
Eternal Flame - The Bangles
Like A Prayer, Cherish, and Express Yourself - Madonna
Sowing the Seeds of Love - Tears for Fears
Good Thing and She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
Satisfied - Richard Marx

That's just a few to start with, I'll probably think of more later.  8)

In 1989 I turned 9 and I didn't know a whole lot of the music at the time. Now I do know quite a few songs from that year.

That's just a few to start with, I'll probably think of more later. 8)

Those are good picks. Fine Young Cannibals also had another big hit that year, entitled "Good Thing".

Some that haven't been mentioned yet that I like:

"Free Falling"--Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
"Love Shack" and "Roam"--The B52's
"Heaven"--Warrant
"I Remember You"--Skid Row
"Janie's Got A Gun"--Aerosmith

And one that was recorded in '89 but didn't become a U.S. hit until early '90: "All Around The World"--Lisa Stansfield. :D 8)

I'll think of a few more later. :)

Did you know that 'Another Day In Paradise' was the last No 1 song of the 1980's?  :)

As a matter of fact, I do. :) And I know that Santana's "Smooth" was the last No 1 song of the 1990's.

I just thought of some more hits from '89:

"Paradise City" and "Patience"--Guns N' Roses
"When I See You Smile"--Bad English

I sure did, luv. In fact, I still recall listening to the Top 40 countdown in December of 1989, as Billy Joel's "Start The Fire" raced PC up the charts, and I kept wondering who would have the decade's final #1 hit. Of course, BJ got to the top first(which was good enough), but if memory serves, Phil bumped the song off on Christmas Eve with his heart-stirring song, giving him the rightful and literal, to coin a phrase, 'Final Recognition'!

Maybe we should research what was the 1ST #1 song of the 80's!

I think the first #1 song of the 80's was 'Please Don't Go' by KC & the Sunshine Band - it seems ironic to me, that they had all those dance classics throughout the 70's and then their final hit turns out to be a ballad.

And here are the votes from Germany  ;)

Buffalo Stance -  Neneh Cherry
Das Omen  - Mysterious Art
The First Time - Robin Beck
Ride On Time - Black Box
In The Air Tonight '88 - Phil Collins  (almost from 88 but also in 89 a hit)

1989 was a pretty sh*tty year for me -and no doubt for my parents, I did turn 13 after all ;)- but some of the music just rocked!

Poison -Alice Cooper
Over Tomorrow -Pseudo Echo
Wild Thing -Sam Kinison & Friends (Everytime I kiss you, I taste what other men had for lunch! ;D)
The Living Years -Mike & The Mechanics
Mystery Girl -The Big O (how beautiful was that song!)

Some of the music sucked too! I would dearly love to forget:
NKOTB
Indecent Obsession
Milli Vanilli
Brother Beyond
BROS
Sonia
Jason Donavan
Collette ::)

Some from 1989 that I always liked

Cherish -- Madonna
Electric Boogie -- Marcia Griffiths
Buffalo Stance -- Neneh Cherry
Capitol Tropical -- Two Man Sound
Have I Told You Lately -- Van Morrison
Turned Away -- Chuckii Booker
A Groovy Kind of Love -- Phil Collins
Me Myself and I -- De La Soul
You Will Know -- Stevie Wonder

Not a bad year for music. Getting to be more like the '90s than the '80s.

There were 2 cool cover songs that came out in '89 as well:

Your Mama Don't Dance - Poison (originally done by Loggins & Messina), and 'Rock On' by Young & the Restless star Michael Damian, which was a re-make of the David Essex classic from 15 years earlier.  :)

Best song of 1989?  Guns N Roses live version of 'Knockin on Heaven's Door'. It wasn't released as a single but was in HEAVY rotation at every rock/top 40 radio station. Only GNR could've pulled that off.

Not relaesed as a single? In Australia it was, but not until 1990. I loved it too! Can still see Axl prancing around in his kilt! :)

The laid back version was released in 1990 on the Days of Thunder soundtrack. In 1991,that same version was on Use Your Illusion 2. The live version that preceded that was the one that got all the airplay here in the U.S. I think this was the only time in history that a song was played so much on the radio but wasn't released as a single.

I like the song too, but I thought the video was a bit tacky due to the fact that Cher was baring her butt throughout it while her then 12-yr old son was playing guitar in the background (I would have been embarrassed if I was him, but that's just me)

Just a quick note Phil would also have 2 hits in 1990 with "I wish It Would Rain Down" and "Something Happened On the Way To Heaven". That would be off his "But Seriously" album released in 89. How fitting I just posted something a couple weeks about how Phil Coolins about how Phil Collins had all those hits in the 80's and he had the last #1 hit of the 80's. I think "It Would It Rain Down" did go to #1 in 90. I;m not sure where "Something Happened On the Way to Heaven" charted even though it did chart high I think in 90.

'I wish it would rain down' is a great song. I hated it when it first came out, they played it constantly to the point of overkill. Plus, I was only 15 at the time. Now that I'm older, I really appreciate the song. It has beautiful lyrics. I've cried several times to it.

Looks like 2005 is another comeback year for Donny Osmond. I've been hearing his "Breeze on By" song on a smooth jazz station I listen to.
It don't sound too bad since it's based on George Benson's "Breezin'" instrumental song from 1976.

In the uk, Was Not Was' "Walk The Dinosaur" was released in 1987. Don't know why it took two years to get released in the US  :o
It is strange that for Was Not Was were from Detroit, formed in 1980.

"Cheer Down" George Harrison
"No Myth" Michael Penn
"Devil Made Me Do It" Golden Earring
"Eternal Flame" The Bangles

If I had made this list when I was 7 1/2 years old in 1989, these would have been my choices:
"Cold hearted" Paula Abdul
"Eternal Flame" The Bangles
"Hangin' Tough" NKOTB
"Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler
"Forever Your Girl" Paula Abdul
"The Living Years" Mike + the Mechanics
"Lost In Your Eyes" Debbie Gibson

P.S. I was about 7 1/2 in the picture to the left. I was at Disneyland for my last time since last year! 15 years too late!

Your Pal,
Doc

Good question! I'm reading my Billboard book, and here's the answer...on 1/1/80, the song at the #1 slot was "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes. It had been #1 since 12/22/79 and the song that bumped it off that slot was "Please Don't Go" by KC & the Sunshine Band, which got to the #1 position on 1/5/80 and was at that slot for 1 week.

Eternal Flame was actually released in 1988.
