Belinda Carlisle's "Circle in the sand" was awesome. It was recorded in 1987, but I don't think it charted as a single till the next year.

I also (of course) adore the Bangles "Hazy shade of winter" and "In your room". Great year for the Bangles!  ;)

Jane Wiedlin's "Rush Hour" was another delicious pop gem!

some more faves of mine from '88:

Rock it to You - The Jets
When We Was Fab - George Harrison
Monkey - George Michael
Eric Clapton's '88 version of 'After Midnight'
Wishing Well - Terence Trent Darby
Nothin But A Good Time - Poison
Just Like Living in Paradise - David Lee Roth

(On a sad note, Roy Orbison passed away in December of that year, just as he was on the verge of a big comeback, having done some new solo material and doing his thing with the Traveling Wilburys)  :(

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" -- Lord I wore out a couple copies of that cassette.  The hit was "What I Am" but all the songs were amazing to me at that time (16).

Oh, yeah, and Expose's "Seasons Change" was another big fave.  That song, "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man" by Astley, "Monkey" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" will always remind me of my summer as a junior camp counselor, trying to control 32 seven-year-olds while the senior counselors went to smoke weed in the woods!  :/

More songs to add to the list

Good Love-Anita Baker
Prove Your Love-Taylor Dayne( I heard that song when it was  when I was 9 years old. I couldn't sleep that night of the day I heard that song. Taylor Dayne's voice and the song itself put fright into me maybe.)
I"ll Still Believe-Brenda K. Starr(love that song.)
Nite and Day-Al. Be Sure
Can You Stand The Rain-New Edition
I'll Be Dreamin-Vanessa Williams
Strangelove-Depeche Mode(my favorite group of all time next to STP and PM Dawn.)
Colour of Love, Getta Out of My dreams, Get into my Car-Billy Ocean
Wishing Well-Terrance Trent D' Arby
Make It last Forever-Keith Sweat(love his voice.)
Shattered Dreams-Johnny Hates Jazz(one hit wonder but memorable.)

There's some Phil Collins songs I'm missing. That guy had a hit every year in the 80's it seemed like solo or with Genisis.  In the Air Tonight was that 88? There was a soft ballad in 88 that he did solo and I just can;t remember the name of the song. There was another song off the "Buster Soundtrack" that was a hit for Phil in 88. I'm only 25 but every time I was in the car with my Mom going to the Doctor from school Phil Collins always had some kind of song on the radio. Even when I was in Pre-School Phil Collins had hits like crazy.

Johnny Hates Jazz were not one hit wonders in the uk. They followed "Shattered Dreams" with "I Don't Wanna Be A Hero", Turn Back The Clock" and then finished off with my all time fave "Don't Say It's Love". They were brilliant.

Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat/Shake Your Love/ Only In My Dreams

"Only In My Dreams" was from 1987.

Like another poster stated, "Shake Your Love" was also from '87, but might've been released as a single or charted in 1988 in the UK.

I'm from the US and I remember all the songs KQ posted except "Don't Say It's Love."  "Shattered Dreams" was by far the biggest -- perhaps even went to #1 -- but I know "Hero" and "Clock" each spent at least a couple weeks on the top 40, 'cause I heard 'em on Rick Dees' show.
