Subject: What were you driving?

Written By: MetalManiac on 07/09/05 at 8:35 pm

What car were your driving in the 80's and what was your dream car then? Were you driving it  or do you have it/close to it now?

Was driving an 86 white Trans Am...was always my dream car but used to break out over the Lotus Esprit. Man I wanted that car!!!!

Ditched the Trans Am in 92 when it became a money pit and got a Cougar. Got rid of that last year for a Jaguar.

My first car was an '81 Datsun 280ZX.  I loved that car.  I didn't have it until 1991 though.  My parents had a 69 Riviera, which they continued to drive into the early 1980's.. I was so embarrassed being seen in that car... but I sure wish I had it now!

I had my bike and my scooter. My parents had a Plymouth Duster, Pontiac Grand Prand Prix and a Ford Tarus during the 80's. The Grand Prix was fast though.

My first car was a 79 Pontiac Phoenix.  Four door monster.  I hated that car, and it continued to live just to spite me.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was still alive today.

I got a '71 Oldsmobile Cutlass for my 16th birthday. It was a total rustbucket but it got me around, not to mention that it had a 350 V-8 in it, so it could get up and move. When I first got it, it had a terrible exhaust leak that wasw so bad it'd make your eyes water. Before I had it fixed, a smartass friend of mine suggested that instead of having a new exhaust put in I should keep the old exhaust and pack it full of marijuana.  ;)

ROTFLMAO! I forgot, I had a Cutlass, think it was a 79, in between the  Mustang and the Trans Am so I can relate. I've never driven a bigger POS in my life. It died while I was driving it off the dealershp's lot so I should have known what I was in for. I don't think I had it all that long before it got hauled off and I got the Trans Am.

'79 Old's Cutlass.

Let's see, the gas gauge didn't work, if you turned the air on the car would stall, oh and the door handle came off in my hand when I was trying to get out one day...other than that it was a great car.  LOL!!

My first car was a 1971 Catalina.  When I turned 18 in 1981 I bought a 1968 Pontiac LeMans (which is basically a watered-down GTO) convertible.  That was MY baby.  Then I traded it in on a new 1984 FIERO!!!  What was I thinking???   Oh well.....  those were the cars I had in the 80s!!

My folks had an Oldsmobile 98 Regency. Big ass aircraft carrier of a car. That's what I drove most of the time. I had a 78 Dodge Diplomat and a Ford Tempo (I don't remember what year it was) during the last part of the '80s. 87-89 or so. All three were humongous pieces of crap.

First car was a rec 1974 Pontiac Firebird. Dropped a Pontiac 455 engine I built myself into it in the early 1990's. It was a project car but sold it when I got divorced in 1994. I miss it sometimes.

Sounds sweet! I still miss my Trans Am sometimes, mainly in the summer with the T roof off.

Cool avatar dude!

Being 0-7 years old in the 80's, I didn't - which is probably a good thing (LOL) - but my parents were sort of rich at the time, so they had several.

Our two most "common" cars -- both of which we had for over 5 years -- were my mom's white '79 Corvette, and my dad's '83 Mercedes Benz Turbo (which we used for family trips most of the time).

I think GM made the Delta smaller in size somewhere around 86-88 model years. GM made the 86 Boneville and 88 Grand Prixsmaller in size than previous generation of those 2 cars. The decesion to make heir cars smaller was coming pressure from the Japanese Car Makes at the time like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda.

3 Cutlasses on this board that were bad no wonder why Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Mazda gained a lot of customers from the Domestic's in the late 80's and early 90's. Of course the Domestics have improved reliability alot over the past 10 years. Gm made alot of bad cars from what understand in the 80's/early 90's. I;m not saying the Japanese make the perfect car either but the Domestic's reliability lagged behind the Japanese in terms of reliability by a wide margin in the 80's/early 90's. Honda though did have their stuggles making an auto tranny in the early 80's but they did learn. They did however make a good standard tranny in the early 80's.  I'm sure Ford has learned from Mazda too on how to make a better car since Ford owns a 3rd of Mazda at the moment. Both the Domestics and the Japanese have all improved quality/reliability over the past 10 years. For the record my parents are a "buy american" family. I am a Honda and Mazda guy myself at the moment.
